Snakes, scorpions and swirling dust didn't deter a Syrian couple from getting married at Jordan's tent city for refugees.

A carpenter, Hodasa al-Hariri, 23, married his 20-year-old cousin, Hanan al-Hariri, in a simple ceremony on Sunday at the Zaatari camp.

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian is scheduled to visit Lebanon next week to discuss with Lebanese officials ways to provide logistic support for the Lebanese army, An Nahar daily reported on Wednesday.

An Nahar said Le Drian’s two-day visit next Thursday would come as part of a trip to Jordan where he is expected to inspect a Syrian refugee camp on the border with Syria.

The number of Syrians fleeing to the al-Zaatri refugee camp in Jordan has doubled in recent days, with more than 10,000 taking shelter there, the U.N. refugee agency said on Tuesday.

"The pace of arrivals from the Syrian border to the Zaatri camp in north Jordan has doubled in the past week," Melissa Flemming, a spokeswoman for the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR, told a press conference.

The United Nations appealed on Monday for $54 million to help meet the growing needs of tens of thousands of Syrian refugees in Jordan, particularly children who "suffer most."

The U.N. Children's Fund UNICEF said in a statement the funds are "urgently" needed "to meet the emergency health, protection, and water and sanitation needs of the growing numbers of Syrian refugee children and their families arriving in Jordan."

Jordan on Sunday barred pro-Palestinian U.S. and European activists from trying to cross into the West Bank for delivering school supplies to students.

"Two buses carrying 100 activists were not allowed to leave the Jordanian side" of Allenby Bridge Crossing, also known as King Hussein Bridge between the West Bank and Jordan, Walid Atallah, a spokesman for the "Welcome to Palestine" campaign in Jordan, told Agence France Presse.

A federal appeals court on Thursday upheld the convictions and sentences of three men, including a Lebanese, found guilty in Ohio of recruiting and training terrorists to kill U.S. soldiers in Iraq.

China will give 30 million yuan ($4.7 million) in humanitarian aid for Syrian refugees in Jordan and Lebanon, the official Xinhua news agency said on Thursday.

Two peacekeepers from the African Union-U.N. mission in Darfur (UNAMID) have been missing since Monday, UNAMID said on Tuesday, the latest incident in a region witnessing an upsurge of unrest.

A brief statement from UNAMID said only that "two of its peacekeepers have gone missing" from Kebkabiya town, about 140 kilometers (87 miles) west of the North Darfur state capital El Fasher.

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden on Monday was to meet King Abdullah II of Jordan, a key U.S. ally in the Middle East that has seen an influx of refugees from the conflict in neighboring Syria.

The two were scheduled to meet at 4:15 pm (2015 GMT) at the vice president's residence in the U.S. capital, the White House said, without providing further details.

Jordan said on Sunday four rockets fired from neighboring Syria fell inside its northern border area, wounding a young girl and sparking a letter of protest.

"A young girl was injured on Sunday after four rockets fell on an area near the border with Syria as a result of clashes inside Syria," Information Minister and government spokesman Samih Maaytah told Agence France Presse without elaborating.
