Hijab in Qatar on Three-Day Visit

Syria's former Prime Minister Riad Hijab, who fled to Jordan after defecting almost two weeks ago, is now in Qatar, his spokesman said on Friday.

"Mr. Hijab went to Qatar on Thursday for a three-day visit during which he will address the media to spell out his plans and his program," spokesman Mohammed Otri told Agence France Presse.

Fabius Says Assad 'Butchering' Syrians, 'Must Leave'

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said on Thursday Syrian President Bashar Assad was "butchering his own people" and that the sooner he leaves the better.

"France's position is clear: we consider Assad to be butchering his own people. He must leave, and the sooner he goes the better," Fabius told reporters at the Zaatari refugee camp, which houses around 6,000 Syrians in northern Jordan.

Air France Resumes Flight after Diversion over Airport Road Closure

Air France said Thursday it will resume its flight to Lebanon, a day after it was forced to land briefly in Syria and then head to Cyprus after protesters blocked the road leading to the Beirut airport.

A spokeswoman said the plane took off Wednesday from Paris, but was diverted when it was an hour from Beirut because of concerns passengers would be trapped if it landed.

Hijab Says Syria Regime Collapsing

Syria's former prime minister, who defected last week, said Tuesday that the regime was collapsing and now only controlled about a third of the conflict-wracked country.

"The Syrian regime only controls 30 percent of Syria's territory. It has collapsed militarily, economically and morally," Riad Hijab told a news conference in the Jordanian capital.

Jordan Police Disperse Angry Syrians at Desert Camp

Jordanian anti-riot police were called in Monday to quell a protest by angry Syrians at a refugee camp after they clashed with guards when they tried to leave the facility, a security official said.

"Around 60 Syrians at the Zaatari refugee camp clashed with security guards when the group attempted to leave the camp and go back to the border town of Ramtha," the official told Agence France Presse, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Syria Refugees Fear Long Stay as French Aid Reaches Jordan

French military medics started on Sunday to set up a field hospital at Jordan's main camp for Syrian refugees, as residents expressed fear that their stay could turn into a long one.

Refugees gathered to watch 85 French medical officers assemble the hospital of 30 large khaki tents as well as 80 tons of medical equipment and aid supplies at the desert camp outside the city of Mafraq in northern Jordan.

France Flies Aid to Syrian Refugees in Jordan

A French cargo plane carrying tons of aid supplies and medical equipment for Syrian refugees landed Saturday in Jordan for tens of thousands of Syrians who fled their country's violence.

The Antonov aircraft is carrying 80 tons of medical and support equipment and more French supplies destined for Syrian refugees will be flown to Jordan soon, the head of the operation, Colonel Yannick Rio, said.

Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird said on Saturday he was "horrified" by the violence in Syria as he visited a desert refugee camp in neighboring Jordan.

"We are tremendously horrified to learn of this experience that so many people here face, the horrifying experiences that cause them to leave," their country, Baird said during a tour of the Zaatari refugee camp outside the northern Jordanian city of Mafraq.

Hollande Says France Set on Political Solution in Syria

French President Francois Hollande said France was committed to finding a political solution to the Syrian conflict as he paid tribute Saturday to the 88th French soldier killed in Afghanistan.

He noted that France had deployed a field hospital in Jordan "as close as possible to the border with Syria to help not only refugees but also combatants fighting the repression of a regime which is no longer motivated by anything but the fear of its own demise."
