Austrian police found the decomposing bodies of up to 50 migrants in an abandoned truck on Thursday, sparking a cross-border hunt for the people-smugglers responsible in the latest tragedy in the Europe-wide crisis.

The grisly discovery on a motorway near the Slovakia and Hungary borders came as European leaders again met to try to find ways to handle the flow of tens of thousands of people seeking refuge in the European Union.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Balkan leaders gathered in Vienna Thursday to seek how to tackle together the biggest migration crisis to hit Europe since World War II.

The talks come a day after Merkel vowed zero tolerance for "vile" anti-migrant violence in Germany, and amid growing criticism of the European Union's failure to agree a joint response.

Amnesty International on Friday slammed conditions at Austria's main refugee camp as a "disgraceful" violation of human rights, highlighting what it called the "inhumane" plight of more than 1,700 unaccompanied children.

The human rights organization visited the Traiskirchen camp, 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of Vienna, last week, a day after the overcrowded center stopped accepting new arrivals because of disastrous sanitary conditions.

Austrian President Heinz Fischer will in September make the first visit to Iran by a European head of state since 2004, his office said Thursday.

An Austrian court on Tuesday sentenced a British soldier to nine years in jail for breaking into a local family's home and sexually abusing their six-year-old daughter.

Lawyers for the paratrooper, who has not been named, said they would appeal the sentence.

Austria on Wednesday blasted a decision by neighboring Hungary to suspend application of a key EU asylum rule as "unacceptable" and warned of "negative" consequences.

"Austria cannot tolerate that," Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz told his Hungarian counterpart Peter Szijjarto in a telephone call, a day after Budapest announced it was opting out of a rule requiring a migrant's claim be processed in the EU country they first arrive in.

Turkey on Saturday lashed out at Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel for recognizing the massacres of Armenians by Ottoman Turkish forces during World War I as genocide.

Three people were killed and 34 were injured Saturday when a "mentally unbalanced" man drove a 4x4 into a street thronged with shoppers in the southern Austrian city of Graz, a local official said.
