An Austrian court on Tuesday sentenced a British soldier to nine years in jail for breaking into a local family's home and sexually abusing their six-year-old daughter.
Lawyers for the paratrooper, who has not been named, said they would appeal the sentence.
At the start of his trial in March, the 30-year-old admitted to attacking the girl but said he could not remember specific details because he had been drinking.
The paratrooper had been taking part in military exercises in the Alps last November when the incident occurred.
He was tackled by the girl's father after entering the house in Neustift im Stubaital and attacking the child.
In his closing statement, the soldier apologized to the girl's parents, saying he was accepting "full responsibility" for his actions.
