A Lithuanian military plane collided midair with a French NATO jet Tuesday and crashed after its two pilots ejected, officials in both countries said.

The French Mirage fighter landed safely after the collision with the Lithuanian L-39 Albatros combat training aircraft near the Zokniai air base in northern Lithuania. The Lithuanian pilots ejected and were taken to a hospital for medical checkups, officials said.

A shooting outside a Copenhagen mosque after prayers to mark the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan has left one person dead and at least two people injured, police said Tuesday.

Police spokesman Lau Thygesen said the shooting took place outside the Muslim Culture Institute, located in the Danish capital's western Vesterbro district, and that the roads surrounding the mosque and a nearby car park have been cordoned off. Thygesen could not immediately provide more details.

Chinese police subdued a knife-wielding assailant and freed a busload of passengers he'd taken captive Tuesday outside a major eastern city, authorities and state media reported.

State media reports of the incident near Nanjing said at least three people aboard the bus were injured and taken to a hospital. Media accounts differed, with some saying there were multiple hijackers, at least one of whom had been shot and killed by a police SWAT team.

All charges have been dropped against three commandos who faced Australian courts-martial over the deaths of five children and an adult during a night raid on a home in Afghanistan in 2009, officials said Tuesday.

Syrian security forces opened fire Tuesday, killing seven people as they tried to disperse thousands of protesters rallying against the regime on the first day of the three-day Muslim holiday that marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, activists said.

The International Organization for Migration said Monday that it has evacuated 850 more stranded foreign workers, including Lebanese, from the Libyan capital Tripoli aboard a chartered ferry.

The Geneva-based organization said the foreigners include women and children and are headed to the eastern port city of Benghazi, from where they will be taken to Egypt and then to their home countries.
