Speaker Nabih Berri stressed that he is willing to perform “all it takes” in order to allow the various political powers to reach an agreement over a new parliamentary electoral law.

He told al-Joumhouria newspaper in remarks published on Friday: “I informed the subcommittee that it can convene on Saturday if it fails to reach an agreement over a new law today.”

He renewed his conviction that the hybrid law, which combines the winner-takes-all and proportional representation systems, is the best solution that the political forces can agree on.

The speaker also ruled out the possibility of holding the elections based on the 1960 law.

The subcommittee is set to meet at parliament for the last time on Friday in an effort to reach an agreement over a new parliamentary electoral law.

The most recent discussions had addressed the various versions of the hybrid law.
