Jumblat Says No Agreement with Hariri on Small Districts: We Both Reject Orthodox Draft

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat revealed on Saturday that no accord has been reached with former Prime Minister Saad Hariri on the electoral law draft proposed by the March 14 coalition.

“We both, however, agreed on rejecting the Orthodox Gathering's draft law for its unconstitutionality,” Jumblat said in an interview with Future TV.

The Orthodox Gathering draft law calls for each sect to elect its own lawmakers. Meanwhile, the March 14 Christian MPs suggested to divide Lebanon into 50 small-sized districts based on a winner-takes-all system.

Jumblat expressed that he is open to discuss all proposed suggestions, stressing that he will not accept any elimination attempt.

He remarked: “The elections must be held on time”.

The PSP leader expressed that the national dialogue sessions would be better held after the elections, when different factions in Lebanon could express their concerns.

Jumblat had held talks with Hariri on Tuesday at the latter's residence in the French capital Paris during which the two leaders discussed the regional situation in all its aspects and the challenges Lebanon is facing, in addition to the various proposals on the electoral law and the stances of all parties.

I wish for the elimination of all of you old warlords, corrupt politicians thriving by fueling sectarianism and selling out your country to the highest bidders. I wish for a new, fresh, clean young politicians who will work hard on restoring what was once a great small country.

It's his right as leader of his community. Didn't say it was the right thing because Lebanon is so complex and nothing is easy to define.

What these two overinflated low lives agree on is further marginalization of the Christians. This is another reason why the Christians should unite, at least vis-a-vis a just electoral law. Time will tell.
