Berri says framework deal ten times worse than the May 17 and 'will not pass'

Parliament Speaker and Hezbollah ally Nabih Berri said early Monday that the trilateral framework agreement between Lebanon, Israel and the United States would not pass as it did not guarantee Lebanon's rights.

"This agreement will not pass, and it will not be implemented in its current form," Berri said in a statement shared by his party the Amal movement, adding that it was "an agreement of 'dictates', not an agreement that preserves Lebanon's rights".

The deal paves the way for Lebanese-Israeli peace and conditions Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon on Hezbollah's disarmament.

Berri vowed to confront the deal politically and warned against internal strife.

"It is ten times worse than the May 17, 1983 agreement," he added, referring to the last time Lebanon and Israel signed a peace deal, which was then cancelled after pressure from Syria and its Lebanese allies.

Hezbollah repeatedly asked Lebanese authorities to link themselves to Iran's negotiations to end its war with the U.S., while Tehran has insisted any ceasefire for the Middle East war should include Lebanon.

In a phone conversation with Berri, the Iranian parliament speaker and head of Tehran's negotiating delegation Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said "our goal is to end the war in Lebanon, return the refugees to their homes and remove the occupation and the withdrawal of the Zionist regime from the Lebanese territory".

All the issues comes from you Berri and your Iranian masters. How much money do they give you? You are the richest politician in Lebanon. Then you send you family to live in Michigan who pay USA taxes to support Israel who then attacks Lebanon with your money. How can your supporters support you?

Did Nabih Berri forget that in the 2022 maritime agreement, he along with Hezbollah and Michel Aoun, gave Israel AKA the Zionist regime 1,430 km2 of Lebanese maritime rights? Their excuse then was this is the best deal we could get. A reminder the May 17, 1983 agreement gave Lebanon back the 1949 Armistice borders. It was not rejected by Nabih Berri and Walid Jumblatt because it was bad, but because Hafez al-Assad ordered them to. He wanted to keep his control on Lebanon and Berri and Jumblatt were his trusted tools.

The more Hezbollah has resisted, refused, and retained self-assigned "rights", the more Lebanon has lost. The more Lebanon loses, the weaker is the negotiation position in foreign affairs. The weaker Lebanese are relative to its neighbors, the more stringent and onerous are the terms of any agreement to establish a lasting peace at a border separating the neighbors.

Pine for 1983 all he wants, that ship sailed long ago and Berri was its captain.

If not the negotiated arrangement on the table, the next peace deal -- the one that would have to be negotiated after another round of Hezbollah wasting Lebanon's people, promise, and dwindling wealth -- would surely be even less to Berri's liking.

Want Peace? Make it.

Berri should be on the front lines with his Iranian brothers. He's rather Lebanon be controlled by anyone other than the Lebanese people, he would rather have Iran or Israel control us. He's a devil and snake

.. as does stupidity, avarice, and multitude of other voices. The problem in the Republic isn't a lack of perspectives speaking; the challenge is leading the country in the direction of the most positively promising ones. By definition, that executive leadership is the job of the President. Everyone else's is just another voice ...
