The Israeli military said an officer was killed and a soldier was wounded on Sunday in fighting in southern Lebanon, two days after Israel and Lebanon signed an agreement aimed at ending hostilities.

Captain David Hazutt, 21, a platoon commander "fell in combat" in southern Lebanon, the military said.

His death brings Israel's military losses to 38 soldiers and one civilian contractor since the war between Israel and Hezbollah erupted in early March.

According to an Israeli army probe of the incident, at around 2 a.m., Israeli soldiers encountered a Hezbollah operative as they entered a structure in the village of Deir Seryan. During the clash, the officer was killed and another soldier was lightly hurt.

Troops later launched searches for the operative, and struck Hezbollah sites in the area, the Israeli military added.

On Sunday, the Lebanese state news agency reported a new Israeli attack targeting the outskirts of the towns of Deir Seryan and Taybeh in southern Lebanon.
