Berri postpones amnesty session after 'sectarian' protests
Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri postponed Wednesday a parliamentary session that was scheduled for Thursday to discuss the amnesty draft law, after "sectarian" protests across Lebanon.
"Despite the efforts made by the parliamentary departments and joint committees to reach a national consensus (on the amnesty law), it has been decided to postpone tomorrow’s session to another date," Berri's office said, adding that Lebanon needs now solidarity and consensus "more than ever".
Sunni Muslim protesters had protested against the draft law across Lebanon, holding portraits of the imprisoned hardline Sunni cleric Ahmad al-Assir.
At least Berri understands that Iranian-backed Shia projects are at a standstill until Hezbollah is demilitarized by the government. Until then, there is a higher probability that we will be less peaceful as a nation with those unrepentant of their crimes living among us, than we would be if we repatriated them to the anywhere besides Lebanon from which they came.
