UNIFIL says deadly blast highlights risks faced by army as it takes on greater responsibilities

UNIFIL on Friday expressed its heartfelt condolences to the Lebanese Army and the families of the personnel who lost their lives in yesterday’s Israeli drone explosion in Naqoura, wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. 

According to the Lebanese Army, the incident occurred while its personnel were inspecting a fallen Israeli army drone that was carrying a grenade.

“This tragic loss highlights the risks faced by the LAF (Lebanese Army) as they take on greater responsibilities in securing southern Lebanon,” UNIFIL said in a statement.

“As reaffirmed by the Security Council in resolution 2790, the parties are to ensure full respect for the Blue Line and a full cessation of hostilities,” it added.

“LAF's full deployment across the south is central to resolution 1701 with UNIFIL coordinating closely with Lebanese authorities in support,” UNIFIL said.
