Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat on Wednesday charged that “the General Security has become a proxy for the Syrian regime,” voicing solidarity with President Michel Suleiman over the issue of administrative appointments.

The General Directorate of General Security “has become a proxy for the Syrian regime and it acted in a foolish way, as it could have sent a judicial warrant to (Salafist activist Shadi) al-Mawlawi instead of luring him into a trap, not to mention the story of the Jordanian who was exported by Iran to Syria and by Syria to Lebanon in a story that reminds us of Shaker al-Absi.”

Geagea Rejects 1960 Electoral Law: March 14 Camp Will Never Accept Delay of Elections

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea noted that flaws in representation in parliamentary electoral laws have existed since 1990, reported al-Akhbar newspaper Wednesday.

He told the newspaper: “It is time to rectify the flaw according to the Taif Accord … and we definitely oppose the 1960 law.”

Qassem Urges Hariri to Support Proportional Representation

Hizbullah deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem urged on Monday ex-Prime Minister Saad Hariri to support the adoption of an electoral law based on proportional representation.

“We are waiting his (Hariri’s) agreement on a fair proportional electoral law, so he gets all the votes of his supporters and the rest of us take the votes of our supporters,” Qassem said in a statement issued by Hizbullah’s media relations department.

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat on Sunday stressed “the need to reach a political solution to the problem” in unrest-hit Tripoli that would “spare the army a confrontation on Tripoli and keep it away from political disputes,” warning of “traps set up by the Syrian regime.”

According to a statement issued by the PSP, Jumblat contacted several security and political officials, urging “the release of Mr. Shadi al-Mawlawi and the addressing of the situation according to the legal norms, to prevent the recurrence of illegal arrests by sides that lack jurisdiction.”

Hizbullah, PSP: For Further Talks on Electoral Law, Protection of Lebanon from Syria Repercussions

Hizbullah and the Progressive Socialist Party have agreed on the need for further discussions among the various parties over the electoral law that will govern the 2013 parliamentary vote, and on the need to “protect Lebanon from the repercussions of the Syrian crisis,” a top Hizbullah official told al-Manar television on Friday, following a dinner banquet that gathered the two parties overnight Thursday.

The dinner was held at the house of Hizbullah Minister Hussein al-Hajj Hassan and attended by Hizbullah Minister Mohammed Fneish, member of the Loyalty to the Resistance bloc MP Hassan Fadlallah and Hizbullah top official Wafiq Safa.

Lebanese officials have slammed Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat for criticizing army chief Gen. Jean Qahwaji as a person with limited capabilities.

March 14: Delegation Will Visit Arsal to Defy Govt. Decision to Distance Itself from Syrian Refugees

The March 14 General Secretariat condemned on Wednesday the government’s failure to cater to the needs of the Syrian refugees in Lebanon, accusing it of imposing a military and security siege against them.

It announced in a statement after its weekly meeting that it will lead a delegation to visit the town of Arsal later this week “in order to break the siege and reject the government’s decision to distance itself from the refugees’ needs.”
