Israeli forces detained 597 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem in August, raising the number of Palestinians in Israeli prisons to more than 7,000, the Palestinian Prisoners Club said.

Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal on Thursday rejected any attempt to disarm his Palestinian Islamist movement in Gaza as demanded by Israel, saying the group's weapons were "sacred".

"The weapons of the resistance are sacred and we will not accept that they be on the agenda" of future negotiations with Israel, Meshaal told a news conference in Doha where he lives in exile.

Vital humanitarian aid poured into Gaza on Thursday as residents began rebuilding their lives following a devastating 50-day war between Israel and Hamas that experts say left no winners.

Millions in and around the war-torn coastal enclave were enjoying a second day of peace after the guns fell silent following a permanent ceasefire agreement that conditioned the easing of Israel-imposed goods and movement restrictions on the territory.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that Islamist foe Hamas had achieved none of its demands in a truce ending 50 days of deadly conflict in Gaza.

"Hamas was hit hard and got none of its demands," Netanyahu said at a news conference in Jerusalem, his first comments since the ceasefire went into effect on Tuesday evening.

Shopkeepers reopened and fishermen put out to sea on Wednesday as Gaza's 1.8 million people breathed a collective sigh of relief after a truce ended 50 days of bloodshed.

For the most part, there was a sense of hope on the streets after the surprise ceasefire came into force at 1600 GMT on Tuesday, ending seven weeks of violence which killed more than 2,140 in Gaza and 70 on the Israeli side.

A young man was mistakenly killed by celebratory gunfire on Tuesday evening in the Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp near the southern city of Sidon, following the announcement of the end of 50-day Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip.

"Kamal al-Hallaq was killed by celebratory gunfire in Ain el-Hilweh,” the state-run National News Agency reported.

The United States gave full backing Tuesday to the announcement of a new long-term ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians after 50 days of violence in and around Gaza.

"We strongly support the ceasefire announcement," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, promising a statement from Secretary of State John Kerry later in the day.

The war in Gaza has sparked several new takes on the Ice Bucket Challenge with Palestinians dumping buckets of rubble over their heads and an Israeli dousing himself with manure.

The craze, where people are filmed pouring buckets of icy water over their heads to raise awareness and money to fight Lou Gehrig's disease, has taken social media by storm.

Celebrations erupted in Gaza on Tuesday as a long-term ceasefire agreed by Israel and the Palestinians went into effect, ending 50 days of the deadliest violence in a decade.

The agreement, which came into effect at 1600 GMT, involves an immediate halt to the violence in Gaza, which began on July 8 and has claimed the lives of 2,143 Palestinians and 69 on the Israeli side.
