The rate of one U.S. to the Lebanese pound hit a new high level on Saturday, one day after the central bank issued a circular that it was launching a foreign exchange unit at BDL to centralize the price of dollars for money exchange houses.

Central bank governor Riad Salameh issued two circulars Friday one relating to cash withdrawals from small bank accounts, and the second to the creation of a foreign exchange unit at BDL to centralize the price of foreign currency, especially U.S. dollar, for money exchangers in light of a crunch liquidity crisis.

Residents of several Lebanese and Syrian regions felt an earthquake Friday evening, media reports said.

"Residents in Beirut, Zgharta, Batroun, Tripoli and Akkar felt an earthquake that lasted for several seconds," Lebanon's state-run National News Agency said.

The Health Ministry announced on Friday that the number of coronavirus cases rose to 508 infected individuals and 17 deaths.

"The total number of laboratory-confirmed cases has reached 508, including those diagnosed at private hospitals, laboratories accredited by the Ministry of Health, and the state-run Rafik Hariri University Hospital,” said the report.

Marada Movement chief Suleiman Franjieh praised the PM on Friday for scratching the item of financial appointments from the Cabinet agenda and said that “the truth has emerged.”

The Lebanese army warned on Friday against breaching the government's so-called general mobilization order to counter the spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic which has infected 508 individuals so far.

The World Bank approved the re-allocation of $40 million under the current Health Resilience Project (US$120 million) to strengthen Lebanon’s Health Ministry’s capacity to respond to the novel coronavirus pandemic, the WB said in a press release on Thursday.

Lebanon on Thursday filed a U.N. complaint against Israel after its warplanes used Lebanese airspace to fire missiles at targets in Syria’s Homs, the Lebanese Foreign Ministry said.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expats has filed a complaint before the U.N. Security Council in New York over the dangerous Israeli violation of Lebanese sovereignty, after three Israeli aircraft bombed Syrian sites from the Lebanese airspace, which represented a threat to Lebanese civilians,” the Ministry said in a statement.

“I saved my conscience,” Prime Minister Hassan Diab said Thursday, in response to a reporter’s question on whether his dropping of financial appointments from Cabinet’s agenda had “saved the government from politics.”

“How can we hire to some posts for high and sometimes fancy salaries as the country goes through a major financial crisis, a dangerous social problem and a scary health crisis?” Diab had said during Cabinet’s session, according to the information minister.
