President Michel Aoun warned on Wednesday that the encampments of displaced Syrians in Lebanon could turn into a safe haven for terrorism, hailing the military and security forces efforts in fighting terrorism.

Aoun's comments came during a cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace in Baabda.

Lebanon's army on Wednesday arrested two suspects and seized narcotics in the Bekaa town of al-Knaiseh, the National News Agency said.

Change and Reform bloc MP Ibrahim Kanaan stressed that the long-awaited wage scale was a right for the civil servants, and emphasized that the return of displaced Syrians home is a must for Lebanon's stability, the National News Agency reported on Wednesday.

A plan for Syrian refugees in Lebanon to return to their homeland has been prepared by the Lebanese Forces who stressed that coordination between the Lebanese and Syrian governments to that end must never happen, al-Joumhouria daily said on Wednesday.

Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq revealed on Tuesday that political interference were behind the release of several detainees who were held over the past week on charges of shooting celebratory gunfire, a declaration highly praised by Kataeb Party chief Sami Gemayel.

Mashnouq declared during a TV interview a day earlier that “60 or 70 detainees out of 90 arrested on charges of shooting celebratory gunfire (during the Brevet official exam results) were released because they had a political coverup.”

A massive fire has broken out in a camp for Syrian refugees in the Bekaa Valley in Bar Elias after midnight, killing one person and injuring many others, the National News Agency said on Tuesday.

Civil Defense firefighters extinguished the fire which broke out shortly after midnight burning down 22 tents out of 185 and killing one refugee and wounding 21, NNA said.

The Lebanese army raided several neighborhoods in the eastern Bekaa town of Baalbek in search of fugitives and arrested five suspects, the National News Agency reported on Tuesday.

Several surveillance cameras, weapons and drugs were confiscated during the army's raid in al-Sharawneh neighborhood in Baalbek, NNA said.

Lebanon's state television website on Tuesday was hacked by the so-called Syrian Revolution Electronic Army protesting the latest army operation at encampments of Syrian refugees in the northeastern border town of Arsal.

Lebanon's government is set to tackle a number of pressing issues during its Wednesday meeting mainly the crisis of Syrian refugees and finding ways for their return to safe zones in Syria, Lebanon's electricity plan and the wage scale.

“The cabinet is set to convene at Baabda Palace to look into a number of thorny files mainly the return of Syrian refugees and their encampments which have proved to be safe haven for terrorists after the army's operation in the outskirts of Arsal,” said al-Joumhouria daily.

MP Ammar Houri stressed on Monday that Lebanon's government must find means to send displaced Syrians living in Lebanon back to safe zones in their war torn country.

“The Lebanese government must make contacts with international bodies to send the displaced Syrians back” to their homeland, said Houri in an interview with VDL (93.3).
