Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said Tuesday that Lebanon, exhausted by divisions and wars, has decided to retrieve the state and its monopoly on arms and to return to the Arab fold.

In a speech at the Arab Media Summit in Dubai, Salam said that Lebanon's project - which "is not a fantasy, but a realistic project" - is based on reforms and sovereignty, explaining that the latter means freeing Lebanon from the duality of arms "which led to dual decision-making and to the loss of a national state."

Two people were injured in overnight strikes on the southern towns of Beit Leef and Majdalzoun, the Health Ministry said Monday.

The overnight strikes targeted two motorcycles, one in Tyre's Majdalzoun and the other in Beit Leef in the district of Bint Jbeil.

The disarmament of the first Palestinian camps in Lebanon will begin in mid-June in three Beirut camps, President Joseph Aoun confirmed Monday.

A joint Lebanese-Palestinian committee met for the first time last week following an accord between Lebanese and Palestinian leaders on disarming Palestinian camps as Lebanon seeks to impose its authority on all its territory.

Celebrating the role of Lebanese media in reform and accountability, British Ambassador Hamish Cowell and Canadian Ambassador Stefanie McCollum co-hosted a reception to reaffirm "the essential role of a free media in Lebanon," the British embassy said.

The event brought together journalists, civil society representatives, diplomats, and advocates to recognize the "indispensable role that a free and independent press plays in holding power to account, to reaffirm its essential part in Lebanon’s reform agenda, and safeguarding democratic societies," the embassy said in a statement.
