Fadlallah hits back at Bassil, says he lacks 'loyalty'
MP Hassan Fadlallah of Hezbollah on Friday snapped back at Free Patriotic Movement chief Gebran Bassil over recent remarks criticizing the Iran-backed group and the recent wars it has fought.
“Lebanon is in dire need today of honesty, loyalty, and words that unite rather than divide -- a national discourse free from incitement and deception. These qualities have been lost among many who disowned the most fundamental values of loyalty and allegiance to a single homeland, bargaining them away for the cheapest price,” Fadlallah said, apparently referring to Bassil.
“They turned insult toward the pain of our people and the blood of our martyrs into a tool for begging at embassy doors, seeking satisfaction steeped in humiliation. They believed we had grown weak and that the time had come to strike at our people, but they fell victim to their own miscalculations,” Fadlallah added.
“Our resistance remains as firmly rooted as our presence in this land -- as unyielding as Jabal Amel, the Bekaa, our southern suburbs, our capital, our north, and our mountain. The voice of our people will remain the voice of dignity, honor and pride,” the MP went on to say.
He added that those who are “morally bankrupt” will find no place “among the great.”
“Though these people may be displaced and their homes destroyed, they are rich in history, sacrifice, and authentic belonging -- strong in their resistance and unity of purpose. This is something that those accustomed to living off the scraps of others will never understand,” Fadlallah added.
Bassil had recently said that Hezbollah and its supporters are still present in the wake of the latest two wars with Israel but have become “destitute, displaced, emigrant and bankrupt.”
“Unfortunately, a large portion of our people have fallen into surrender and despair … Is this the outcome? Is this the victory that we want?” Bassil added.
“I’m blaming Hezbollah because it implicated us in a war that we should not have engaged in, because it is not managing to get out of it and because it is not helping us to get out of it,” the FPM chief and former Hezbollah ally added.
