Moroccan authorities said Wednesday they dismantled a cell in the city of Fez that was recruiting fighters for the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.

The interior ministry said the head of the cell maintained strong ties with IS leadership and sent Moroccans to training camps in the two countries, where they received intensive training in weapons handling.

A Turkish Airlines plane flying from Istanbul to Brazil made an emergency landing in Morocco on Monday after a bomb threat, the company said.

However a search on the Boeing 777-300ER plane bound for Sao Paulo from Istanbul found the warning was false and the plane is being allowed to continue on its route, it added.

Morocco has joined the Saudi-led military coalition that has intervened to support Yemeni President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi in his fight against Iran-backed Shiite rebels, the foreign ministry said Thursday.

The first names for a new Libyan unity government could emerge this week after progress in U.N.-mediated talks between its warring parties, U.N. special envoy Bernardino Leon said Monday.

Leon was in Brussels for a conference of Libyan mayors after visiting Morocco, where he has been working with representatives of Libya's rival parliaments to reach a deal to end months of fighting.

U.N. envoy to Libya Bernardino Leon urged rival Libyan lawmakers meeting in Morocco Friday to try to nail down a political agreement within days as they began a weekend of "decisive" talks.

He said talks over the next three days will focus on security arrangements, the creation of a national unity government and confidence-building measures.

Morocco and the United Arab Emirates signed an accord Tuesday to cooperate in the "battle against terrorism," notably against the Islamic State group, Morocco's official MAP news agency reported.

The agreement was among 21 bilateral deals to be signed during a visit by the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan.
