The United States will help Lebanon investigate the car bombing in Beirut that killed Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau head Brigadier General Wissam al-Hasan, a staunch critic of Syria, the State Department said Sunday.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke by phone Sunday with Prime Minister Najib Miqati to again condemn Friday's attack that killed Hasan and two others, department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.
Prime Minister Najib Miqati did not present his resignation in light of the assassination of Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau head Wissam al-Hasan, reported Al-Joumhouria newspaper Monday.
It said that the premier did not speak of resigning to President Michel Suleiman or the cabinet.

President Michel Suleiman on Sunday stressed that the government “must not provide cover for perpetrators and criminals” and called for “speeding up the indictments” in the cases of ex-minister Michel Samaha and the Nahr al-Bared clashes, in a speech eulogizing slain Maj. Gen. Wissam a-Hasan, chief of the Internal Security Forces' Intelligence Bureau.
“I cannot but express my deep feelings of grief and pain over the martyrs, topped by Maj. Gen. Wissam al-Hasan and Chief Warrant Officer Ahmed Suhyooni, and I extend my warmest condolences to the families of the martyrs, their comrades, the minister of interior, the prime minister and everyone who loved the martyrs,” said Suleiman at the ISF headquarters in Ashrafiyeh.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon contacted on Saturday Prime Minister Najib Miqati to express his “solidarity with the Lebanese people” after the assassination of Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau head Brigadier General Wissam al-Hasan.
Ban "expressed strong solidarity with the people of Lebanon and commended the prime minister, the government and the president (Michel Suleiman) for their handling of the matter," the U.N. statement said.

British Ambassador to Lebanon Tom Fletcher denounced on Saturday the assassination of Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau head Brigadier General Wissam al-Hasan, calling on the Lebanese to unite.
“The attack is against the Lebanese state and its people and all those who love Lebanon... We will cooperate with the Lebanese authorities in the upcoming days to encourage unity, stability and sovereignty,” Fletcher said after holding talks with President Michel Suleiman at the Baabda Palace.

French President Francois Hollande urged on Saturday his Lebanese counterpart President Michel Suleiman and Prime Minister Najib Miqati to avoid any political vacuum in the country and for the cabinet to continue its tasks.
“It's very important that Lebanon doesn't fall in a political vacuum... The cabinet must carry on with its tasks,” Hollande said in a letter conveyed to Suleiman by French Ambassador to Lebanon Patrice Paoli.

Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi condemned on Saturday the Ashrafiyeh bombing in Beirut on Friday and the assassination of Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau head Wissam al-Hasan, lamenting the fact that it came shortly after Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Lebanon in September.
He said in a statement: “We strongly condemn these criminal acts that remind us of days that we thought we had overcome.”
President Michel Suleiman stressed on Friday the need to maintain political rhetoric in Lebanon within democratic practices and national principles in accordance with the Baabda Declaration.
He said: “Lebanon's commitment to disassociate itself from the disputes of others requires the commitment of all of its Lebanese players.”

United Nations and Arab League envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi stressed the necessity to find a solution for the conflict in Syria, warning that it could spread to neighboring countries and “burn everything,” the As Safir daily said Thursday.
During his visit to Beirut Wednesday, where he met with senior Lebanese officials, Brahimi briefed President Michel Suleiman on the results of his meetings with officials in the countries he had visited to find a solution to the crisis in Syria and the obstacles that hinder his mission, al-Joumhouria daily quoted unnamed sources informed on the discussions as saying.

United Nations and Arab League envoy to end the Syrian crisis Lakhdar Brahimi held talks on Wednesday with senior Lebanese officials on the conflict in the neighboring country, warning the unrest there will inevitably spread to the region.
He hoped that the ceasefire set for the Eid al-Adha holiday “will pave the way for a permanent solution to the crisis.”
