Angelina Jolie Says Syria Crisis 'Worst', Calls for More Aid

Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie urged the international community to boost aid to Syrian refugees hit by what she called "the worst humanitarian crisis of the 21st century," a UNHCR statement said Wednesday.

Jolie, who is UNHCR special envoy for refugee affairs, visited the Jordan-Syria border overnight accompanied by head of U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres.

Jordan Endorses Abu Qatada Extradition Treaty with Britain

Jordan's King Abdullah II has endorsed a treaty with Britain expected to pave the way for the extradition of radical cleric Abu Qatada who has resisted deportation for the past decade, official Petra news agency reported Tuesday.

Petra said the king issued a royal decree "endorsing the Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters between Jordan and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".

King Abdullah: Jordan Can Protect Itself from Syria War Threats

King Abdullah II vowed Sunday to protect Jordan from the war in Syria, after the United States announced its warplanes and missiles will remain in the kingdom at the end of military exercises.

U.S. Confirms F-16s, Patriot Missiles to Stay in Jordan

The Pentagon confirmed on Saturday that F-16 fighter jets and Patriot missile interceptors will remain in Jordan after the end of a joint military exercise this month.

"Secretary (Chuck) Hagel has approved a request from the Kingdom of Jordan for a detachment of F-16s and Patriot Missiles to remain in Jordan following the conclusion of the Eager Lion Exercise next week," spokesman George Little said in a statement.

Jordan's parliament has approved an agreement with Britain on the extradition of suspects wanted by Amman, including radical cleric Abu Qatada, an MP said Wednesday.

"Parliament on Tuesday approved a treaty with Britain to help Jordan extradite suspects from Britain," Khalil Attieh, the deputy house speaker, told Agence France Presse. "The agreement does not specifically mention Abu Qatada but it includes him and others."
