Egypt has suspended all major football games after 19 people were killed in the latest outbreak of violence between fans and police, authorities said Monday.

Egyptian football fans have been repeatedly involved in the country's explosive political mix and Sunday's unrest raised fears of further clashes in the days ahead.

Al-Azhar, Sunni Islam's most prestigious centre of learning, expressed outrage Wednesday at the Islamic State group for burning to death a captive Jordanian pilot, saying its militants deserve to be killed or crucified.

After a video was released showing the caged fighter pilot, Maaz al-Kassasbeh, dying engulfed in flames, the Cairo-based authority's head, Ahmed al-Tayib, expressed his "strong dismay at this cowardly act".

A bomb wounded three civilians, one of whom later died, when it exploded on the outskirts of Egypt's second city of Alexandria, police said.

A 12-year-old boy was among those hurt in the explosion near a residential neighborhood on the western outskirts of the Mediterranean city.

A court in Egypt violated the country's international human rights obligations by sentencing 183 men to death Monday for killing 13 policemen, the European Union said.

"Today's decision of a court in Egypt to sentence 183 defendants to death following a mass trial is in violation of Egypt's international human rights obligations," the EU's foreign service said in a statement.

Clashes between protesters and security forces left at least 14 people dead on Sunday, the anniversary of Egypt's 2011 revolt that toppled strongman Hosni Mubarak.

Authorities had tightened security in Cairo and other cities after Islamists called for protests against the government of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the former army chief who ousted his Islamist predecessor Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

A female demonstrator was killed in clashes with Egyptian police during a rare leftwing protest in central Cairo Saturday, the eve of the anniversary of the 2011 uprising against Hosni Mubarak, an official said.

Shaima al-Sabbagh, who friends said was 34 and the mother of a five-year-old boy, died of birdshot wounds, a health ministry spokesman said.

A bomb in Cairo wounded four policemen and a civilian Friday, officials said.

It was the second in the capital in as many days, after an explosion wounded a police officer late Thursday outside the Al-Qubba presidential palace.

World leaders paid tribute to Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah on Friday, praising the late monarch as   a key mediator between Muslims and the West.

U.S. President Barack Obama said he and Abdullah, whose country has for decades been a strategic ally of Washington, had enjoyed a "genuine and warm friendship". 

Prosecutors in Egypt have dismissed a sexual harassment complaint against Ecuador's ambassador because of insufficient evidence, the foreign ministry in Quito said Monday.

An unidentified woman working as a consultant to Ecuadoran diplomatic staff in Cairo made the allegation against German Espinoza last month, a ministry statement said.

An Egyptian court on Monday acquitted 26 men accused of "debauchery" after their night-time arrest from a Cairo bathhouse for suspected homosexual activity, in a case which triggered international concern.

The men were arrested in the December 7 raid on a hamam in the Azbakeya district of the capital, amid fears of a widening police crackdown on gays in Egypt.
