A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip has hit southern Israel, the army said on Thursday, but no casualties or damage was reported.

The remains of the rocket, which was fired on Wednesday, were found early on Thursday after a search by security forces, an army statement said.

It added that it was the first rocket fired from the besieged Palestinian territory since August 18.

Israel retaliated in August with out air raids against rocket launch sites in the Gaza enclave.

Israel holds Islamist rulers Hamas, as the de facto authority in Gaza, responsible for all rocket fire, regardless of which group launches an attack.
