Aridi Launches Final Phase of Smoking Ban

Minister of Public Works and Transportation Ghazi Aridi launched on Wednesday the last phase of a law banning smoking in public transportation vehicles, warning that violators will face a LL135,000 fine.

Lebanese Parliament adopted a draft law in August 2011 to "limit smoking and regulate the manufacture, packaging, and advertising of tobacco products in Lebanon". The law became effective in public institutions and public places September 2011 and will be applied in restaurants and cafes by September 2012.

The first phase of the law is already in effect and it banned smoking in all public places, except for the hospitality sector. It also banned the selling of tobacco to minors and required “No Smoking” signs in public buildings.

The second phase was introduced on March 3, banning the advertising and sponsorship of all tobacco products, logos and brands.

The final phase will come into effect on the 3rd of September and will ban smoking at all restaurants, bars, clubs, cafes, theaters and hotels.
