Official: U.S.-Trained Syria Rebels Gave Ammo, Equipment to Qaida Group

The Pentagon on Friday said a group of U.S.-trained Syrian rebels had handed over ammunition and equipment to al-Qaida's affiliate in the country, the Al-Nusra Front, purportedly in exchange for safe passage.

The startling acknowledgement contrasted with earlier Pentagon denials of reports that some fighters had either defected or handed over gear.

"Unfortunately, we learned late today that the NSF (New Syrian Forces) unit now says it did in fact provide six pickup trucks and a portion of their ammunition to a suspected Al-Nusra Front (group)," Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis said.

Colonel Patrick Ryder, a spokesman for Central Command (CENTCOM), which is overseeing efforts against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria, said the fighters had handed over the gear in exchange for safe passage in the Al-Nusra operating area.

"If accurate, the report of NSF members providing equipment to Al-Nusra Front is very concerning and a violation of Syria train-and-equip program guidelines," Ryder said.

Ryder added that the pickup vehicles and ammunition represented about 25 percent of the equipment issued to the group by the U.S.-led coalition.

"We are using all means at our disposal to look into what exactly happened and determine the appropriate response," Ryder said.

A defense official told Agence France Presse that according to the rebels, there had not been any defections, but he stressed: "We only know what they have told us."

- A new setback -

The development is another embarrassing setback for the U.S. effort to "train and equip" moderate Syrian rebels to fight Islamic State jihadists in Syria.

The $500-million program originally aimed to ready around 5,400 vetted fighters a year for three years but problems finding suitable candidates have seen only a fraction getting trained.

The first graduates, who made up a group of 54 fighters, were attacked by Al-Nusra in July and the Pentagon isn't sure what happened to them all. At least one was killed.

The second group, consisting of about 70 rebels, were sent back to Syria last weekend and reports began circulating on Twitter soon after that they had either defected or handed over equipment.

Last week, before the insertion of the new fighters, the U.S. general overseeing efforts against IS drew disbelief from senior lawmakers when he told them only "four or five" U.S.-trained rebels were on the ground fighting in Syria.

Unwilling to commit U.S. ground troops in the region, the Obama administration in January launched the train-and-equip mission for Syrian opposition fighters as part of a broader push to work with locals there and in Iraq.

The program has faltered, with many would-be fighters failing the strict screening process. The troops are being trained as part of the U.S.-led fight against Islamic State in the region.

Okay Naharnet, and you blame the Syrian government for calling all their opponents terrorists? Unless you start to recognize Al Qaeda as moderates too now?

This is exactly as the U.S always did. Support Al Qaeda and other takfiris against legitimate governments, and cry Wolf when it hits them in return just like the 9/11 inside job.

the U.S will probaly just escalate their support to ISIS and Al Qaeda to counter the Russian intervention in Syria.

.Southern, I truly believe there are not many moderate rebels. Anyone who thinks this war is about God, and God being great around killing/explosions is not on the same page with me. At the same time I empathize with what 1anonymetexasusa has laid out. I identify with that. This is the sectarian nature of where we live. You can't identify with what 1anonymetexasusa laid out, just like 1anonymetexasusa and I can't identify the same way with Israeli this or that. Its just a cluster. The one thing that can't be denied is that the land of Jesus, and the cradle of Christianity is being exterminated and losing its followers in the predominantly part of the world. We can't even keep a growing presence in Lebanon.

texas, you keep up making new stories everytime your predictions becomes overtly false.
Fact now is, the U.N doesn't want any more refugeed on it's hands and thet want to make peace in Syria even with Assad to achieve this.

The U.S are backing out, all their projects failed so far. Now let's see what happens if the Russians actually start fighting, they probaly have a better chance than the Americans, because the Russians have allies on the ground - The Syrian army.

March 14 wins nothing texas and you know it.
The precondition for peace talks back then, was the removal of Assad. Now that is not a condition anymore, In Geneva they all said President Bashar al-Assad could play no part in a transitional government.

Now in the present we see Merkel, Kerry and even Erdogan talking about forming a peace plan with Assad. So once again you are wrong texas.

Only win for March 14 would be the complete destruction of the Syrian Government, and the complete takeover of Syria by the takfiri groups.

But both Iran and Russia are making sure that isn't happening. So what do you hope to achieve now texas?

Assad is still here and he is still in the same place as he have always been.

He is far from gone, Russia are backing Assad whether you like it or not. It has nothing to so with influence, it's about saving Syria from the takfiris.
Russias talks with Israel are the same they had with the West, making sure there aint clashes between them.

In diplomacy smiles goes hand in hand, so you believe Hariri and Sayed Hassan are allies because they smiled to each other while handshaking?
