Jordan MPs Seek Israeli Ambassador Expulsion, Warn of Peace Deal Review
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةJordan warned Wednesday that it might review a 1994 peace treaty with Israel after Israeli MPs began a debate on allowing Jewish prayers at Jerusalem's sensitive Al-Aqsa mosque compound.
"If Israel wants to violate the peace treaty in this issue, the entire treaty, its articles, details and wording will be put on the table," Prime Minister Abdullah Nsur told Qatar's Al-Watan newspaper in an interview.
Under the peace treaty, Jordan is the custodian of Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem.
Nsur's remarks, quoted by state-run Petra news agency, came as Jordan's parliament passed a motion urging the expulsion of Israel's ambassador to the kingdom, Daniel Nevo.
"Such Israeli attempts would lead to the destruction of the peace treaty as the international community is pushing for peace between Israel and the Palestinians," government spokesman Mohammad Momnai told Petra.
"The Jordanian custodianship is not a privilege granted by Israel. It is the Hashemites' historic responsibility that is emphasized in the peace treaty."
Last year, Jordan's King Abdullah II and Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas signed an agreement to confirm a verbal deal dating back to 1924 that gave the kingdom custodianship over Jerusalem's Muslim holy sites.
The Jordanian parliament's vote followed a motion the previous day signed by 47 MPs demanding that the peace treaty with Israel be scrapped.
"All deputies who attended a meeting today to discuss Israel's debate on sovereignty over Al-Aqsa voted to kick out the Israeli envoy and recall the Jordanian ambassador in Israel (Walid Obeidat)," prominent lower house deputy Khalil Attieh told Agence France Presse.
The Israeli foreign ministry declined to comment on the Jordanian parliament's vote.
The Knesset on Tuesday evening began a debate called by rightwingers to demand that Israel end its practice of forbidding Jewish prayer at the Al-Aqsa compound.
In a motion which was not put to a vote, MP Moshe Feiglin, a hardline member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party, said Israel's fear of igniting Muslim rage amounted to discrimination against Jews.
"Any terror organisation can raise its flag there (but) there can be no trace of the Israeli flag," Feiglin told the Knesset. "Only Jews are forbidden to pray at this place."
Jews now pray at the Western Wall plaza below the compound.
Israeli police on Tuesday clashed with stone-throwing Palestinian protesters at the compound ahead of the Knesset debate.
The Al-Aqsa compound, which lies in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem's Old City, is a flashpoint because of its significance to both Muslims and Jews.
Sitting above the Western Wall plaza, it houses the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa mosques and is Islam's third-holiest site.
But it is also Judaism's holiest place, being the site of the first and second Jewish temples.
putting on a show to control the people's outrage at this new high in israeli racism.
even if they kick the zionist ambassador, it will be without consequences and in a few months, or years, he will come back
shameful that arab states are now throwing powder in their people's eyes to protect israel.
it's hard to determine whether you're more a fan of takfiris, or of israelis... but i guess it's normal, since the two are getting more and more identical, in their speeches and objectives.
euf euf walla, this is too much courage for me. rafa3oulna rassna with this intrepid move!
and stop relating all the time to syria as if it was the same as israel, it is not and every true arab knows it, despite the zionist propaganda wishes.
Mowaten - let us cut the BS. The Arab countries have no military option at the moment and most are busy dealing with the bigger threat paused to them by the combination of Iranian expansionism and fundementalist backlash. As for the Arab people, their march for freedom has been derailed by a combination of inept political class, murderous regimes and the support they enjoy from Iran and KSA. Until the Arab people put their act together, we Lebanese had better focus on building our country. All the resistance garbage or the Islamic Ummah or Arab nation are fed to the simples of minds.
I could be an enemy of the Zionists, an enemy of Israel, but cannot be an enemy of people in australia just because theyu were born jews.
So why is Lebanon being still called an Arab State while you have inside it Armenians or Kurds?
The arab part of the word arab State is from the fact that the national language is arabic. The same or equivalent naming is the Francophone state or Hispanic State. regards
kaakaaljdid: please show me where you read articles referring to lebanon as "the arab state"
@Thrust, in Lebanon people are born for generations and considered as un-Lebanese because their father is not Lebanese. At the same time people coming from abroad who doesn't speak a word of Lebanese are considered as Lebanese: what is the difference with the Israeli law of Return -while even Arabs and Palestinians born in Israel get the Israeli citizenship, unlike in Lebanon.
@Mowaten: Lebanon is part of the Arab League. What about people who are not Arabs? And what about atheist or Bahai, or other religions which are not represented in the 18 official sects? We are not better than Israel, but we still think we are, that's the problem.
lebanon, unlike israel, does not discriminate between its sects, giving more rights to some and less to others based on religion.
and no, lebanon never called itself the "arab state" nor "muslim state" nor "christian state", and never asked to be recognized as such. which is what we were talking about. ie: israel wanting to be recognized as "jewish state" to deny all rights to non-jews.
now i guess you dont mind, since you're a jewish israeli, and i'm very glad for you. now if you would just stop polluting this lebanese forum we'd be grateful.
Thrust, I can see your argument but just because Israel contains 25% Arabs does not entitle it to be considered a secular state of some sort. The fact remains that any jew around the world can claim so called 'right of return' and is automatically granted Israel citizenship, hence the reference to a jewish state. No other country in the world grants citizenship based on a religious affiliation. I do agree with you though that the jewish religion has been hijacked by the Zionist. The whole creation Israel was to dupe the general jewish population into believing that they are some kind of race and even more a 'chosen race.'
Israel is NOT a secular state at the contrary, but still with "the right of return", and juicy salaries, the majority of the Jews did NOT return and join. Not every jewish is israeli and not every israeli is jewish
"chosen people" is not something jewish, but adopted by the educated jewish people and educated people from all religions, since several centuries. Thinkers have realized ages ago that to boost a child's brain, you have to make him feel superior and he will excel. Check Jane Elliott Brown eyes blue eyes on youtube. But uneducated parents kick their children and treat them like sheep.
unfortunate facts:
How many jewish persons got the Nobel prize, how many arabs ? and last but not least.....why?
Thrust, I think you are debating something else when it comes to chosen people, I was using it in the context of the Zionist excuse as to why jews are entitled to palesine, simply of the fact that they are the farce that they are the 'chosen people.' To discuss your point regarding Nobel prize, I would hardly go by that as a standard.
Chosen people as to why they are entitled to palestine, is primitive false pretense and middle ages propaganda I do not comment on. I do not think that they mention it in Israel today, it was 1948 lecture I presume.
cityboy: thrust is right on the point that calling israel the "jewish state" is wrong.
because it is an implicit acceptance of discrimination against non-jewish people (a jewish state would not have to provide basic rights to non-jewish citizens) and this is why israel is pushing hard today to be recognized as "jewish state".
mowaten, indeed you are right. I guess my point is that Israel is an apartheid state that favours a jewish identity. not saying it is right and in that sense I can understand thrust point of view in that it is wrong to call Israel a jewish state.
hence, Israel should be called a Zionist state, cause it was created by the Zionist as part of a total effort in order to advance the cause of Zionism. perhaps calling it Israel, or a jewish state is both misleading.
@mowaten, many international news outlets refer to Lebanon as an Arab state. CNN is one of them. It is inaccurate and irritating (to me at least), but that's how it is.
And Lebanon is included in the Arab League, which implies it's not different than Syria, Morocco or Yemen. This is a discrimination to all French speakers, Kurds or Armenians for instance. And an insult to Lebanon specificity and multisecular identity.
first i never saw any media calling lebanon "the arab state" like they do with israel, without even using the word "israel" they just say "the jewish state.
and second, what foreign media say, especially those who can't even place tripoli on a map without confusing lebanon and libya, does not commit or represent us.
lol that was the most pathetic comment of the day ibnladen, trying so hard to be funny but "total fail" doesnt even begin to describe it.
By the way Jewish is a culture. They use the Hebrew language, Jewish calendar with Jewish feast, etc. Like in France you have holidays in Christmas. The problem is not here, u can be Jewish and not discriminate, as you can be Muslim and not discriminate. But in fact all the countries in the region discriminate against its citizens, when they don't kill them.
Lebanon is not a good case: you can't never ever be a Prime Minister if you are "Christian" -considered as a kind of "race" in Lebanon. Lebanese people are not less racists than Israelis. In fact, Arabs are racists, and Jews and Arabs are somehow the same shit. Only in Western countries you will find tolerance and openmindness. My mother is Lebanese, my wife is Lebanese, but I will never be considered Lebanese by this racist State of Lebanon. Maybe if I had married an Israeli women I could more easily become Israeli than now to become Lebanese (and what for, it's only problems).
Actually there are many official religions in Israel. Sunni Islam and Shia Islam are some of them (while it's better not to be a Shia Muslim in many Arab countries). Arab is an official language as well as Hebrew there, but many Lebanese don't know that, as Lebanese don't know many thing about Israel and Judaism because they never encounter them. When Kurd will be an official language in Arab countries, equal to Arab, we could talk about this question differently.
Lebanon is not Arab. It never was and never will be. The 'Arab identity' that was forcefully placed in Lebanon was put after the forced signature on the Taef accord in the 1990's. when they created Lebanon it was specifically clear that Lebanon was not Arab but independent from all and unique.
Though half of my comments have been acid etched, my humble respects to the journalist who saw that the article be reviewed and corrected.
