Iran: U.S. Deployment in Gulf 'Source of Insecurity'

Iran on Tuesday insisted that U.S. military deployment in the Gulf is "a source of insecurity", after the fatal shooting of an Indian fisherman by a U.S. navy ship in waters off Dubai.

"When the Islamic republic says that the presence of foreign forces is a source of insecurity, this is a perfect example" of what Iran means, foreign ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told reporters.

UAE Arrests Activists' Lawyer

Emirati authorities have arrested, Mohammed al-Roken, a prominent lawyer who has defended activists in the country, one of his sons told Agence France Presse on Tuesday.

"Police yesterday evening intercepted his car" as he went to search for another son, Rashid, and his brother-in-law Abdullah al-Hajeri, both of whom had disappeared near the southeastern town of Hatta, Salim al-Roken said. Salim, who was accompanying his father in a separate car, said Roken called and told them that "security services have arrested me."

India Asks UAE to Probe Deadly U.S. Shooting on Fishermen

India called on the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday to probe the fatal shooting of an Indian fisherman by a U.S. navy ship in waters off Dubai, the Indian foreign ministry said.

"India's ambassador in Abu Dhabi has requested UAE authorities to probe the circumstances of the tragic incident," ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said.

UAE Arrests Group Targeting 'State Security'

The United Arab Emirates said on Sunday it has dismantled a group plotting against state security without identifying their affiliation or the number of arrests.

The prosecutor general, Salem Said Kabish, said an unspecified number of people were being questioned for having formed "a group aimed at damaging the security of the state," the official news agency WAM reported.

Reports: UAE Court Sentences Two Drug Dealers to Death

An Abu Dhabi court sentenced to death two drug dealers who shot and wounded undercover police officers during an arrest operation in Bani Yas, local media reported on Tuesday.

In February, the state news agency WAM had reported that the pair -- a 26-year-old Emirati and a 19-year-old Yemeni -- shot and wounded two police officers in Bani Yas, west of Abu Dhabi city.
