Around 200 protestors took to the streets of the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli on Thursday to express outrage over a U.S.-made film mocking Islam and the Prophet Mohammed.

Some protestors burned the U.S. flag while chanting "Allahu akbar!" (God is greatest), while others carried with them black flags that read: "There is no God but God, and Mohammed is his prophet."

The seventh periodic meeting for the northern city of Tripoli was held on Friday at the residence of MP Mohammed Kabbara.

The gatherers expressed relief with the stable situation in the city and hailed the measures taken by the security forces in the area.

Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi is scheduled to visit the northern city of Tripoli on the first week of November, Tripoli Mufti Sheikh Malek al-Shaar said.

Al-Shaar said that he held talks with al-Rahi in Diman on Wednesday.

The head of the Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc MP Fouad Saniora handed on Tuesday President Michel Suleiman a March 14 memo that reiterates the opposition’s call for the expulsion of Syrian Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdul Karim Ali and the control of the Lebanese border with Syria through U.N. help.

The memorandum also called for the formation of a national salvation government and filing a complaint to the Arab League over Syria’s repeated border violations.

The Lebanese army said on Monday that it arrested four people for kidnapping a man after forcing him into the trunk of a car in the northern city of Tripoli.

A communique issued by the army command said: “An army patrol in Corniche al-Mina on Sunday stopped a suspicious vehicle with four people on board after they tried to flee.”

State commissioner to the military court Judge Saqr Saqr charged 7 detainees, including a Palestinian, with opening fire at the army in gunbattles in the northern city of Tripoli, the National News Agency reported on Friday.

Saqr referred the 7 men to the military examining magistrate, urging him to issue arrest warrants to reveal the identities of their accomplices.

Seven people arrested by the Lebanese army in the northern city of Tripoli are expected to be referred to the Military Tribunal for legal measures if there was evidence of their involvement in the latest gunbattles, the National News Agency reported Thursday.

NNA said the men could be referred to the tribunal in the next 24 hours.

Hanadi Nuaimi, who disappeared mysteriously in the northern city of Tripoli two days ago, was freed overnight Wednesday.

Tripoli police arrested the gang that kidnapped the 19-year-old girl under the commands of the head of the gendarmerie, Brig. Gen. Bassam Ayoubi, the National News Agency reported.

Several roads were blocked with burning tires on Wednesday in the Tripoli area of al-Tal over the disappearance of an 18-year-old girl.

“Al-Tal road in Tripoli has been blocked over the disappearance of the girl Hanadi M. N. since yesterday,” Radio Voice of Lebanon (93.3) reported.

The Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc noted on Tuesday that the facts released by the media over the case of former minister Michel Samaha and Syrian security chief Ali al-Mamlouk revealed the “extent of the Syrian regime’s involvement” in destabilizing Lebanon.

It said in a statement after its weekly meeting: “The revelations require the expulsion of Syrian Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdul Karim Ali because he had proven his involvement in covering up and participating in crimes in Lebanon.”
