UK to Double Cyber-Security Funding, Push Syria Vote Post-Paris

Britain vowed Tuesday to double its investment in cyber-security to counter threats including from the Islamic State group following the Paris attacks claimed by IS which killed at least 129 people.

Prime Minister David Cameron also announced he would make a fresh effort to build support for Britain to join air strikes on Syria, saying there was now a "compelling case" for doing so.

Hollande and Iran's Rouhani Discuss Syria by Phone

French President Francois Hollande and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani discussed the war in Syria by telephone on Tuesday, in the wake of a devastating attack on Paris by Islamic State jihadists.

The two leaders highlighted the importance of the Vienna process to end the nearly five-year war, after global diplomats on Saturday agreed on a fixed calendar for Syria to move towards elections in 18 months.

Russia Confirms Bomb Downed Sinai Jet, Pounds IS as Egypt Says No 'Firm Conclusion' Yet

Russia on Tuesday pounded Islamic States targets in Syria after confirming that a bomb attack brought down its passenger jet over Egypt last month, killing all 224 people on board. 

President Vladimir Putin pledged to hunt down and "punish" those behind the attack but did not blame any specific group as he ordered an intensification of Moscow's campaign in Syria, vowing "vengeance."

French Planes Destroy IS Targets in Raqa

French police launched dozens of fresh raids across the country Tuesday as warplanes strafed the Syrian stronghold of Islamic State jihadists which France has vowed to destroy after their attack on Paris.

Authorities in France and Belgium stepped up the hunt for more gunmen and possible accomplices to the shootings and suicide  bombings on bars, restaurants and a sports stadium that killed 129 mostly young people on Friday night.

France Deploys Aircraft Carrier to Support Syria Raids

U.S.-Led Strikes Destroy 116 IS Fuel Trucks in East Syria

Strikes by the U.S.-led air coalition fighting the Islamic State group destroyed 116 fuel trucks used by the jihadist organization in eastern Syria, the Pentagon said on Monday.

In a statement, the Pentagon said the trucks were destroyed in a single strike on Sunday near Albu Kamal, an IS-held town in Deir Ezzor province along Syria's border with Iraq.

Syria's Assad: Paris Attacks Result of French Policy

Syrian President Bashar Assad said Saturday that French policy had contributed to the "spread of terrorism" that culminated in attacks claimed by the Islamic State group which killed 128 people in Paris.

In a meeting with a delegation of French lawmakers in Damascus, Assad said France's "mistaken policies... had contributed to the spread of terrorism."

Paris Attacks Heighten Pressure at Vienna Syria Talks

Multiple attacks in Paris claimed by Islamic State jihadists increased the pressure on some 20 countries and organizations meeting in Vienna on Saturday to overcome deep divisions and help end Syria's civil war.

Witnesses said that the gunmen who killed almost 130 people in Friday's wave of attacks shouted "Allahu akbar" ("God is greatest") and blamed French military action in Syria against Islamic State (IS) extremists.
