Syria Regime Warns against any Foreign Ground 'Aggression'

Syria's government warned Saturday that its forces would resist any foreign ground intervention after reports that Saudi Arabia and Turkey, which both support rebel forces, could send in troops. 

"Any ground intervention on Syrian territory without government authorisation would amount to an aggression that must be resisted," Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said at a news conference in Damascus.

120 Regime, Rebel Fighters Killed Friday in Battle for Aleppo Town

More than 120 members of Syrian regime forces and rebels were killed Friday in heavy fighting for a town north of Aleppo city, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The Britain-based monitor said rebels had regained control of more than half of the town of Ratyan in the fierce clashes, leaving about 60 opposition fighters and 60 regime forces dead.

An Iranian general has been killed by jihadists in Syria, reports say, the latest high-profile casualty of Tehran's efforts to prop up President Bashar Assad.

Brigadier General Mohsen Ghajarian of the elite Revolutionary Guards was killed in the northern province of Aleppo, according to the Fars news agency, which is close to the Guards.

Russia Accuses Turkey of Preparing to Invade Syria

Russia on Thursday accused Turkey of actively preparing to invade Syria, saying it had spotted troops and military equipment on the border with the war-torn country.

"We have serious grounds to suspect Turkey is in intensive preparations for an armed invasion of the territory of a sovereign state -- the Syrian Arab Republic," the defense ministry said in a statement.

Aid Convoy Enters Regime-Besieged Town near Damascus

An aid convoy on Wednesday entered a regime-besieged town near Syria's capital, at a time when the opposition is demanding a lifting of blockades at peace talks in Geneva, the Red Cross announced.

"We entered with medical aid to Moadimayat al-Sham and we are distributing food aid in the buffer zone" between regime and rebel forces, Pawel Krzysiek, spokesman in Damascus of the International Committee of the Red Cross, told AFP.
