Girls from the Afghanistan national soccer team who were recently granted asylum in Portugal have had a surprise visit from the captain of the senior team.
Farkhunda Muhtaj, a professional player who from her home in Canada spent weeks helping arrange their recent rescue from Afghanistan, flew into the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, for an emotional reunion with the girls' team late Wednesday.

Luis Suárez converted a stoppage-time penalty after Antoine Griezmann scored his first goal since returning to Atlético Madrid as the Spanish team fought back to beat 10-man AC Milan 2-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Griezmann leveled six minutes from time and Atlético was awarded a penalty that Suárez struck confidently down the middle in the seventh minute of stoppage with the last of the visitor's 22 shots.

France midfielder Steven Nzonzi has joined Qatar's Al-Rayyan, a club source said on Tuesday as the team posted a picture of the former Roma star on Instagram with the word "done".
Nzonzi, 32, who came on as a substitute in France's 2018 World Cup final win over Croatia, joins a long list of prominent internationals to move to the resource-rich Gulf emirate including Xavi and James Rodriguez.

Roger Hunt, a striker in the only England team to win the World Cup and Liverpool's all-time record league scorer, has died. He was 83.
Liverpool, where Hunt spent most of his playing career, said he died on Monday after a long illness.

A look at what’s happening in European football on Tuesday:
GROUP A

Argentina has summoned three English Premier League players for South American World Cup qualifiers next month. They were involved in the suspended match with Brazil this month.
Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez and Tottenham's Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso were picked by coach Lionel Scaloni on Monday to face Paraguay, Uruguay and Peru. The coach did not choose midfielder Emiliano Buendia, who was also involved in the chaos in Sao Paulo.

The escalation of squabbling started with Spanish league president Javier Tebas publicly launching jibes at Paris Saint-Germain — particularly for signing Lionel Messi.
An enraged response by PSG, a complaint in writing to Tebas, was not going to silence him.

Wearing the No. 10 jersey that used to belong to Lionel Messi, Ansu Fati made a triumphant return from a long injury layoff on Sunday, scoring a goal and giving Barcelona fans hope for the future.
Fati, who hadn't played in more than 10 months because of a knee injury, scored in stoppage time to seal a 3-0 Spanish league win over Levante that helped ease some of the pressure on Barcelona following a three-match winless streak.

Paulo Dybala left the field in tears shortly after scoring to set Juventus on the way to a 3-2 victory over Sampdoria in Serie A on Sunday.
Dybala has endured a number of muscular injuries over the years and it appeared as if he had suffered another one after pulling up suddenly. The Juventus forward was able to walk off and was consoled by his teammates as he did so.

With 55 shots in the last two games, no goals and a pair of 1-0 losses, Manchester United's attack is looking blunt. That's even with Cristiano Ronaldo back at the club, although he only played in Saturday's defeat to Aston Villa and not the League Cup exit to West Ham. There will be little room for error in the Champions League if Villarreal can't be beaten at Old Trafford in Group F on Wednesday after United opened two weeks ago with a loss to Young Boys. Villarreal beat United in last season's Europa League final and Ole Gunnar Solskjær will want to avoid United dropping into Europe's second-tier competition again after benefiting from so much investment in the squad.
