Report: Hariri May Make Testimony at STL Trial in January

The Special Tribunal for Lebanon trial is set to witness “prominent developments,” a March 14 MP linked to the trial told the Saudi daily al-Riyadh on Sunday.

Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri may make an appearance at the trial to issue a testimony in the assassination of his father, former PM Rafik Hariri, on February 14, 2005.

STL President Again Urges Merhi to Appear before Court, Appoint Lawyer

Special Tribunal for Lebanon President David Baragwanath on Friday urged the suspect Hassan Habib Merhi anew to appear before the court and appoint a lawyer to represent him.

“Seven weeks ago, on October 21, 2013, I invited you to consider whether you are prepared to face the Special Tribunal for Lebanon to answer the charges in the indictment,” Baragwanath said in a written statement addressed to Merhi.

Amelie Zinzius Sworn in as New STL Deputy Registrar

Amelie Zinzius was sworn on Friday as Deputy Registrar for the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.

She replaces Daryl Mundis, who was appointed Registrar in July this year, announced the STL in a statement.

Britain Donates Additional $1.6 Million to Special Tribunal for Lebanon

British Foreign Secretary William Hague announced Tuesday that London intends to donate $1.6 million to the U.N.-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon, describing the move as a “voluntary contribution."

"The UK is committed to supporting security, stability and justice for the people of Lebanon," Hague said in a written statement to the British parliament on the UK's contribution to the STL.

STL: Trial in Hariri Assassination Set for January 16, 2014

The Trial Chamber of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon has scheduled the start of trial in the case of Ayyash et al. for Thursday, January 16, 2014, announced the STL in a statement on Tuesday.

It explained: “This decision has been made after consulting the parties to the case at the Trial Chamber’s last public hearing.”

Lebanon to Pay STL Share in Three Installments

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati said on Monday that cabinet will pay Lebanon's share to fund the Special Tribunal for Lebanon in installments.

“The exceptional approval came in light of our commitment to the STL,” Miqati said in comments published in As Safir newspaper.

Report: Suleiman, Miqati Approve Funding of STL

President Michel Suleiman and Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati granted Caretaker Finance Minister Mohammed al-Safadi an “exceptional approval” to fund the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.

According to al-Akhbar newspaper published on Thursday, the general-secretary of cabinet Secretary General Suheil Bouji handed over a memorandum to Safadi reminding him of Suleiman and Miqati's “exceptional approval.”

STL Trial Chamber to Hold Second Pre-Trial Conference ahead of January Trial

The Trial Chamber of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon will hold a second Pre-Trial Conference on Monday, December 2, in preparation for the start of the trial in the Ayyash et al. Case, it announced in a statement on Tuesday.
