Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed on Sunday announced he was resigning following an agreement ending the troubled country's transitional administration.

"Considering the interest of the society and in compliance with the Kampala accord, I decided to quit to compromise for the national interest", Abdullahi Mohamed told reporters in Mogadishu, thanking those who supported him.

An Egyptian boat seized with its 22-member crew by pirates off the coast of Somalia in August 2010 has been freed, an Egyptian foreign ministry official said on Friday.

The Pakistani government helped Egypt secure the release of the Suez which docked in Oman, the official news agency MENA reported quoting Mohammed Abdel Hakam.

A powerful bomb blew up inside the Nigerian police headquarters in the capital on Thursday, killing a suspected suicide bomber although other casualties were not immediately clear, officials said.

"The police force headquarters has been bombed, everywhere is bombed," deputy national police spokesman Yemi Ajayi told Agence France Presse from Abuja.

An explosion Friday in the home of Somalia's interior minister killed him and a woman suspected of being a bomber as violent demonstrations swept the capital.

Interior Minister Abdishakur Sheik Hassan, who also was minister for national security, died after shrapnel hit his legs and other parts of his body, said Ministry of Information spokesman Abdifatah Abdinur.

Clashes pitting Somali government forces and their African Union allies against Islamist rebels for control of Mogadishu's main market left at least 17 civilians dead on Thursday, officials said.

Many of the victims died when stray artillery fire hit a bus station where people were waiting.

The Indian navy has captured 61 suspected Somali pirates and rescued 13 fishermen after a firefight with a pirate mother ship in the Arabian Sea, a navy spokesman said Monday.

"A total of 74 men have been apprehended of which 61 are suspected to be Somali pirates," Indian navy spokesman P.V.S Satish said, adding the incident happened on Saturday night within Indian waters.

Forty-nine Somali migrants drowned when their boat capsized during heavy winds in the Gulf of Aden off Yemen's southern coast, the Yemeni interior ministry said Thursday.

The migrants who were attempting to reach Yemen, "drowned off the coast of Bir Ali in the south ... when their boat capsized four nautical miles offshore" during a wind storm on Tuesday, a ministry statement said.

Somali pirates killed four Americans Tuesday, including a retired couple onboard their hijacked yacht in a sudden violent turn to efforts to end a hostage drama, the U.S. military said.

Four Somali pirates also died, two of them killed by U.S. special forces in one of the deadliest endings to a raft of hostage-takings off the coast of Somalia that are often resolved through ransom payments.

A suicide car bomb attack on a government security base in Mogadishu Monday killed at least nine people, including six policemen, and wounded scores, a police official told Agence France Presse.

At least nine people, including six police officers, were killed. Many others were wounded, the toll could be higher but I don't have more details," said Abdirahman Issa, a senior police official in the Somali capital.

South Korean navy commandos Friday stormed a ship hijacked by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean, rescuing all the crew and killing eight pirates, military officials said.

"Our special forces stormed the hijacked Samho Jewelry earlier today and freed all hostages," said Colonel Lee Bung-Woo, a spokesman for the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
