U.N. Court Sentences Srebrenica Commander to Life for Genocide

The U.N.'s Yugoslav war crimes court found Bosnian Serb general Zdravko Tolimir guilty of genocide for his role in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, Europe's worst atrocity since World War II, and sentenced him to life in jail.

"The majority of the court finds you guilty" of crimes including genocide, judge Christoph Flugge told the Hague-based International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

Kosovo, Serbia Launch Joint Border Checks

Two border crossings between Serbia and its former province Kosovo, which Belgrade does not recognize, opened under joint management for the first time Monday, following European Union mediation.

The two crossings in Merdare and Jarinje, which had previously been functioning as informal checkpoints between Serbia and northern Kosovo, were officially opened for both business and individual travelers.

Winter Weather Claims Second Victim in the Balkans

Freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall in the Balkans, that seriously affected traffic throughout the region, claimed a second victim on Sunday as a man died from cold in northern Serbia.

The victim was found dead near his home in the village of Ravni Topolovac in northeastern Serbia, emergency services said.

Serbia's ambassador to NATO committed suicide by jumping from a multistory car park at Brussels airport on Tuesday, local media reported.

Serbia Man Wins Compensation after False HIV Diagnosis

A Serbian court has ordered a hospital to pay 4,000 euros ($5,200) in compensation to a man who claimed his life was ruined when he was falsely diagnosed with HIV, a newspaper reported Saturday.

Dragisa Zekic was 23 years old when he was diagnosed with HIV in 1986 at the main Serbian hospital in Belgrade, the Vecernje Novosti daily reported.

Croatian General Calls on Serb War Refugees to Return

Croatian general Ante Gotovina, who was cleared last week of committing war crimes, called on Serb war refugees to return to Croatia, in an interview with a Serbian daily Monday.

"I would tell them to return to Croatia. They are Croatian citizens, it is their country as much as it is mine," Gotovina said when asked by the Kurir Serbian daily what his message was for Croatian Serbs who fled the country during the 1991-95 war that pitted Zagreb against Belgrade-backed rebel Serbs.

Serbs Burn Croatia Flag to Protest Generals' Acquittal

Several hundred Serbian nationalists Saturday burned Croatia's flag during a protest against a U.N. court acquitting two Croatian generals of war crimes against ethnic Serbs in the 1990s.

The protestors, who gathered in front of the presidency building in Belgrade for a rally called by the ultra-nationalist Serb Radical Party (SRS), urged the authorities to give up Serbia's bid to join the European Union and cease all cooperation with the U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague.
