The March 14 general-secretariat hinted on Wednesday that national dialogue became useless after the Syria-Hizbullah alliance decided on behalf of the Lebanese to prevent the state from owning arms.

“Dialogue became useless after three years of time wasting and after the regional-local axis decided on behalf of the Lebanese what their state should not possess,” the general-secretariat said following its weekly meeting.

The March 14-backed opposition is mulling to reject President Michel Suleiman’s invitation for national dialogue over claims that Hizbullah’s arms are no longer acceptable.

An Nahar daily quoted March 14 decision-makers as saying that the opposition might not respond to Suleiman’s request given that it has already launched a campaign against Hizbullah’s weapons and the discussion of the issue during all-party talks is useless.

U.N. Chief Ban Ki-moon praised Prime Minister Najib Miqati’s commitment to the international resolutions, al-Liwaa newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Ban sent a message to Miqati through Lebanon's Special Envoy to the U.N. Nawaf Salam welcoming the Premiership’s commitment to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, Security Council resolution 1701 and all the other resolutions.

U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon has reiterated his “strong support” for the international tribunal, which has submitted to the Lebanese authorities a sealed indictment and arrest warrants in the case of ex-PM Rafik Hariri’s assassination.

The secretary general calls on “all states to support the independent judicial process, in particular by cooperating with the Special Tribunal in the execution of the indictment and arrest warrants," said a statement issued by his spokesperson on Thursday.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has been briefed on the content of the indictment in ex-Premier Rafik Hariri’s murder case and a copy of it was referred to the judicial department at the United Nations, pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat on Wednesday.

“The release of the indictment is a matter of few days, if not hours,” sources told the newspaper.

Sources close to Premier Najib Miqati denied that he was exerting efforts through contacts with top diplomats to delay the release of the indictment by the international tribunal.

“This is untrue,” the sources told An Nahar daily published Wednesday about information that Miqati was seeking to postpone the announcement of the indictment’s details.

Israel’s Ambassador to the U.N. has dubbed Lebanon as a country that has opened its borders for smuggled weapons, warning that the Jewish state would not withdraw from the border village of Ghajar as long as Hizbullah continues to arm itself.

Ambassador Ron Prosor said following a Security Council session on the situation in the Middle East on Thursday that “Lebanon would be best defined as the open border for smuggled ammunition and arms.”

U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon Michael Williams welcomed on Tuesday the “positive role” played by Speaker Nabih Berri in the formation of the government.

“I welcomed the formation of the Lebanese government last week and also the particular role that Speaker Nabih Berri played, the positive role, in the formation of the government,” Williams said after holding talks with head of the Amal movement.

Prime Minister Najib Miqati has stressed to foreign diplomats that Lebanon would remain committed to international resolutions including the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.

During separate meetings he held with Arab and Asian ambassadors, and U.S. Ambassador Maura Connelly on Monday, Miqati said that Lebanon is committed to the tribunal that will try ex-Premier Rafik Hariri’s suspected assassins.

Prime Minister Najib Miqati, who on Thursday entered the Grand Serail for the first time in six years, reiterated that his cabinet will not confront the international community.

“Lebanon is not in a confrontation with the Western community nor the international community,” Miqati told pan-Arab radio station Sawa.
