Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Awadh Asiri on Wednesday urged all Saudi citizens in Lebanon to leave the country “immediately,” after media reports said a Saudi man and his son were kidnapped by al-Meqdad clan in retaliation for the abduction of one of its members in Damascus by the Syrian opposition.

Later on Wednesday, the UAE and Qatar also urged their citizens to leave Lebanon immediately.

An emergency summit of the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) began late Tuesday with a proposal to suspend conflict-wracked Syria, a move strongly opposed by Iran.

A draft final statement obtained by Agence France Presse said the summit "approves the suspension of Syria's membership," a measure recommended by a preparatory ministerial meeting held Monday in the western Saudi city of Jeddah.

Foreign ministers preparing for a summit in Mecca of the Islamic Cooperation Organization on Monday recommended the expulsion of Syria from the 57-nation bloc, its secretary general said.

Asked by reporters whether the foreign ministers had decided to call for a suspension after their meeting in the Saudi Red Sea city of Jeddah to prepare for Tuesday's summit, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said: "Yes."

Former prime minister Saad Hariri on Monday held talks with Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz in Mecca, in the presence of Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabr al-Thani, Hariri’s press office said.

Hariri and Sheikh Hamad “had iftar at the table of King Abdullah, in the presence of a large number of Saudi princes, ministers and senior officials,” according to Hariri’s press office.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived on Monday in Saudi Arabia ahead of an extraordinary summit in Mecca expected to focus on the Syria conflict, on which Tehran and Riyadh have taken opposing sides.

Ahmadinejad arrived in the Muslim holy city of Medina, in western Saudi Arabia, SPA state news agency said, adding that he visited the mosque and tomb of Islam's Prophet Mohammed.

Arab foreign ministers postponed a planned meeting on the Syrian conflict that had been due to take place in Saudi Arabia later on Sunday, a top Arab League official said.

Ministers had been due to meet in in the Red Sea city of Jeddah to mull their next moves on the Syrian conflict after the resignation of U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan earlier this month, as well as who might succeed him.

The planned release of a Saudi diplomat, kidnapped in Yemen almost four months ago, fell through at the last minute, when his captors doubled their ransom demand, a tribal mediator said on Sunday.

Abdullah al-Khalidi, Saudi deputy consul in Yemen's main southern city Aden, was supposed to be released overnight, but his captors "reneged at the last moment over the amount of the ransom," the mediator, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP.

The United States on Tuesday added a wanted Saudi militant alleged to be a top trainer of foreign al-Qaida fighters in camps in Afghanistan to its list of global terrorists.

Azzam Abdullah Zureik al-Maulid al-Subhi, better known as Mansour al-Harbi, is among about 80 Saudi citizens which Saudi Arabia has put on its most wanted list and wants extradited, accusing them of ties to the al-Qaida network.

Saudi Arabia accused authorities in Buddhist-majority Myanmar on Monday of "ethnic cleansing" against the Muslim Rohingya minority in the west of the country, state media reported on Tuesday.

The Saudi cabinet said it "condemns the ethnic cleansing campaign and brutal attacks against Myanmar's Muslim Rohingya citizens, as well as violation of human rights by forcing them to leave their homeland," in a statement carried by the official SPA news agency.

The Iranian Chief of General Staff Hasan Fruzabadi held Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar responsible for bloodshed in Syria in a statement published on the Revolutionary Guard’s website.

“To help the war plans of the Great Satan (USA) is not a good principal to follow for neighboring countries. If they are acting on this basis, then they should know that the next time, it will be Turkey’s and other countries turn to take the fall,” Fruzabadi said.
