Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Awadh Asiri urged on Tuesday officials to safeguard Lebanon and avert any negative repercussions imposed by the turmoil in the neighboring country Syria.

“Lebanon and the region are passing through a delicate situation caused by the developments in Syria,” the ambassador said in an interview with As Safir newspaper.

Saudi Arabia has decided to give Syria's opposition National Coalition the right to process applications of Syrians wishing to perform the hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in autumn, an official said on Monday.

The kingdom handled last year's hajj visa applications without cooperating with Damascus.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia condemned on Monday the “blatant interference” of Hizbullah in the Syrian crisis, urging responding to international calls to provide “humanitarian aid to those affected by the war inside and outside the country.”

"The cabinet discussed the dangerous repercussions of the events taking place in Syria, as well as the escalation of violence and the use of military equipment to bomb and kill civilians,” the Saudi Press Agency reported.

An Indonesian woman died Sunday in a fire lit by workers outside her country's consulate in western Saudi Arabia, where thousands converged seeking to resolve their immigration status, a consular source said.

Some 8,000 Indonesians gathered outside the consulate in Jeddah trying to sort out their papers as illegal foreign workers in the kingdom face a deadline to regularize their position or leave.

Grand Mufti Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Qabbani rejected on Sunday statements attacking Saudi Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz al-Shaikh, considering that this is an “offense to all Muslims.”

"An attack on the Mufti of Saudi Arabia is an attack on all Muslim due to the noble religious status he represents in the Arab and Islamic world,” Qabbani said in a released statement, adding that al-Shaikh is a “renowned Islamic and international reference in religious matters.”

Some 180,000 illegal foreign workers have left Saudi Arabia since April 1 under an amnesty that allowed them to try to sort out their papers or leave without paying a penalty, a report said on Sunday.

"Between the beginning of April and the start of June, 180,000 foreigners left the kingdom for good," Okaz daily quoted Badr Malek, spokesman for the passports department, as saying.

Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Awadh Asiri confirmed on Sunday that his country urged Saudi national present in Lebanon to comply with the Gulf Cooperation Council decision.

“The embassy called in text messages on Saudi citizens in Lebanon to abide by the GCC decision to inform them of Saudi concerns over their security and safety,” Asiri said in comments published in An Nahar newspaper.

Saudi Arabia's top cleric urged governments and fellow clerics across the Muslim world to punish Hizbullah for its intervention in the Syrian civil war against the mainly Sunni rebels fighting to oust President Bashar Assad.

Grand mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz al-Shaikh said Hizbullah's actions vindicated the Sunni-dominated kingdom's long suspicion of the group and its alliance with Shiite Iran.

Saudi Arabia on Thursday urged Lebanon's people to act "wisely" and end their fighting in the city of Tripoli, wracked by a wave of bloody violence linked to the conflict in neighboring Syria.

Riyadh was following "with deep concern the bloody events taking place in Tripoli... that benefit nobody but those who do not mean well for Lebanon and its people," said Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal.

Saudi authorities beheaded by the sword on Wednesday a Pakistani convicted of smuggling heroin, the interior ministry said.

Wajid Ali Zarnoosh was found guilty of trafficking heroin into Saudi Arabia, the ministry said in a statement carried by SPA state news agency.
