Saudi religious police arrested two young men offering a "free hug" to passers-by in the ultra-conservative Muslim kingdom's capital, local media reported Thursday.

The arrests were made in the main Tahlia Street where the two men were waving banners marked "Free Hug" in English, according to news website Sabq.org.

Saudi Arabia's embassy in Beirut has called on citizens to leave Lebanon because of the dangerous situation, its ambassador said Thursday, after some media linked the kingdom to deadly blasts.

"The Saudi embassy sent a text message to (Saudi) citizens in Lebanon advising them to leave, considering the danger of the situation and out of concern for their safety," the ambassador Ali Awadh Asiri, told AFP.

Six mortar rounds crashed into a remote area of northeastern Saudi Arabia near a border triangle with Iraq and Kuwait, without causing damage, a border guard spokesman said Thursday.

General Mohammed al-Ghamidi said Saudi authorities were in "direct contact" with their neighbors to identify the source of Wednesday's shelling and to prevent a repetition.

Saudi Arabia condemned on Wednesday the double blast that targeted the Iranian embassy in Beirut, slamming it as a “terrorist and cowardly act.”

"Saudi Arabia strongly condemns the terrorist and cowardly blasts that took place in Beirut on Tuesday,” the Saudi Press Agency said.

Flash floods sparked by torrential rain in largely desert Saudi Arabia have killed seven people over the past three days, the civil defense authority said on Wednesday.

Iran's ambassador to Lebanon narrowly escaped a twin suicide bombing outside the embassy that killed 23 people, including an aide and four guards, an Iranian diplomatic source told AFP Wednesday.

Saudi health authorities on Wednesday announced a new MERS death, raising to 54 the number of people killed by the coronavirus in the country with the most fatalities.

A 73-year-old Saudi woman, infected by the virus and who had suffered chronic illnesses, died in Riyadh, the health ministry said in a statement on its website.

Syria has strongly condemned a double bomb blast outside the Iranian embassy in Beirut on Tuesday that killed at least 23 people, official media reported.

"The Syrian government firmly condemns the terrorist attack carried out near the Iranian embassy in Beirut," state television said.

Saudi Arabia on Monday ruled out any contact with Israel, with which it has no diplomatic ties, after a British newspaper reported that the two countries could coordinate efforts against Iran.

The kingdom, which is Iran's chief regional rival, "has no relations or contacts with Israel of any kind or at any level," said a foreign ministry spokesman, quoted by state news agency SPA.
