Israel's lead peace negotiator Tzipi Livni on Sunday ruled out Turkey taking an immediate role in reviving talks with the Palestinians, shortly before U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry flew in.

Asked if Turkey could play an important role in the peace process -- an idea raised by Kerry at a press conference earlier in the day in Istanbul -- she told public radio: "The idea is interesting, but it could take time."

Hamas accused Western and Arab spy agencies on Saturday of operating in the Gaza Strip and said it had a list of alleged collaborators.

"The Gaza Strip is swarming with Western intelligence agencies, such as the American, British, French and German services," said Mohammed Lafi, an internal security chief, quoted on the Hamas interior ministry website.

Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird held what he termed "positive" talks with Palestinian leaders in the West Bank town of Ramallah on Saturday despite their differences.

Baird, on a four-day visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories, met with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas and foreign minister Riyad al-Malki.

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas has demanded that Israel's prime minister present a map for a future Palestinian state before any peace talks can resume, an aide said on Friday.

Abbas "wants to know, through a map to be presented by Benjamin Netanyahu to (U.S. Secretary of State John) Kerry, what the prime minister's view of a two-state solution would be, especially the borders," political adviser Nimr Hammad told Agence France Presse.

The newly reelected chief of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, Khaled Meshaal, pledged on Thursday to work to end a rift with his West Bank rival, Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas.

Meshaal, speaking at a pro-Palestinian conference in Cairo, "affirmed his movement's solicitude for ending the division with its negative effects," the Palestinian Safa news agency quoted his as saying.

Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad has left hospital after being treated for pancreatic inflammation, a medical source said on Thursday.

The 61-year-old was taken to hospital in Ramallah on Monday with stomach pains, but was released late on Wednesday after undergoing treatment and returned home to rest, a medic close to Fayyad said.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday slammed the burning of an effigy of Qatar's emir in the West Bank, saying it did not reflect the opinion of the Palestinian leadership or people.

"The burning of an effigy of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani does not represent in any way the position of the state of Palestine, Fatah or the Palestinian people," he said in a statement carried by the news agency WAFA.

Gaza militants fired a rocket into southern Israel on Tuesday, after the death in custody of a Palestinian who suffered from cancer, Israeli police said.

"There was a rocket that was fired," police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told Agence France Presse. "It landed in an open area," he said, adding there were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage.

A majority of Palestinians believe the U.S. will fail to revive the Middle East peace process, according to a survey after Barack Obama's visit to the region, seen by Agence France Presse on Tuesday.

The Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research's report, conducted March 28-30, surveyed 1,270 people in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad was in hospital for an inflamed pancreas on Tuesday, a medic in Ramallah said, having been admitted the night before with stomach pains.

"Medical tests and scans show that Fayyad is suffering from pancreatic inflammation," a doctor at the hospital in the West Bank city told Agence France Presse.
