Two soldiers from Cameroon have been killed and at least two others wounded in an attack by Boko Haram fighters near the Nigerian border, security sources told AFP on Monday.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, one Cameroonian military officer said two troops were killed, and an officer and a soldier injured in a clash on Saturday with the Islamists.

A gunman opened fire on Friday outside a school in northeast Nigeria's city of Potiskum, seriously wounding 12 students in an area repeatedly targeted by Boko Haram, a police officer and witnesses said.

"We have evacuated 12 people with serious gunshot wounds to hospital from the scene of the shooting attack," said the officer, who requested anonymity.

Fleeing Boko Haram fighters left the hundreds of women and children they captured to their fate in the bush as Nigerian soldiers closed in last week. Many survived but others weren't so lucky.

Aid worker Mohammed Bello spent Wednesday morning at the Malkohi internally displaced people camp outside the northeastern city of Yola, listening to the stories of some of the women rescued by the army.

Nigerian troops have rescued 25 more women and children from Boko Haram's northeastern stronghold in the Sambisa Forest, killing a number of insurgents and destroying Islamist camps, the military said Wednesday. 

"Seven additional terrorists camps were yesterday destroyed as more terrorists also died in the ongoing onslaught to flush them out of Sambisa forest," the defense headquarters said in a statement.

Zara Malam's son Mohammed was just five months old when Boko Haram stormed their village in northeastern Nigeria and carried them off to their stronghold in the Sambisa forest.

After several months as a hostage, the boy's head is enlarged from malnutrition and crinkled skin sags from the joints of his tiny, boney body.
