Nepal Prime Minister Sushil Koirala and other political leaders appealed for calm Tuesday as anger flared over the police killing of two demonstrators during a protest against a new constitution.

Hundreds of police reinforcements were sent to the country's troubled midwest, the day after the two protesters were killed when police fired in a bid to fend off an attack on the home of a local lawmaker.

Locals have recovered the remains of another 17 people who were killed in Nepal's Langtang trekking region in April when an earthquake triggered a massive avalanche, a senior official said Wednesday.

Shiva Ram Gelal, chief officer of the central Rasuwa district that forms part of Langtang, said that locals had informed authorities after they found the remains in the last week.

Emergency workers on Friday recovered seven more bodies from the debris of multiple landslides triggered by heavy rains in Nepal, taking the confirmed death toll to 36.

A landslide triggered by heavy monsoon rains buried parts of a school in western Nepal on Thursday, killing a student and injuring 12 people.

Police said the landslide buried three classrooms at the school in Pokhara where students were sitting end-of-term exams.
