March 14 lawmakers have accused Speaker Nabih Berri of putting the speakership in confrontation of not only the March 14 forces but also the Cedar Revolution after he said it took Lebanon back 60 years on the democratic level.

In remarks to An Nahar daily on Tuesday, the sources warned that Berri was making attempts to put on the agenda of a parliamentary session on June 8 the issue of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon and Lebanon’s commitment to it.

Premier-designate Najib Miqati seems to have resumed consultations aimed at forming the new cabinet after meetings with the different representatives of March 8 leaders came to a standstill almost two weeks ago.

Miqati met with Speaker Nabih Berri in Ain el-Tineh on Monday night. The two officials later held another round of talks in the presence of Berri’s aide MP Ali Hassan Khalil and the assistant of the Hizbullah leader, Hussein Khalil, An Nahar daily reported.

Speaker Nabih Berri on Monday expressed his belief that “the Cedar Revolution has set Lebanon back 60 years legally and demographically, squandered public money, and provided the suitable atmosphere for further foreign intervention in Lebanon’s present and future.”

“This is the reason behind its failure,” Berri noted in a speech at a ceremony organized by the International Intellectual Conference to honor late Shiite clerics Mohammed Makki al-Jizzini and Zeineddine al-Jabhi.

The March 14 forces might resort to adopting a “mobile” draft-law to thwart an attempt by Speaker Nabih Berri to hold a parliamentary session on June 8 to renew the mandate of the Central Bank governor.

Berri is seeking to give the parliament executive powers amid an absence of a government and a need to find solutions to pressing issues such as the renewal of Riyad Salameh’s mandate and amnesty for several prisoners.

Sources close to Progressive Socialist party leader Walid Jumblat have reiterated that the lawmaker’s remarks on Hizbullah’s rejection to form the cabinet did not intend to “harm” the party.

Sources told As Safir and An Nahar newspapers on Monday that Jumblat “sought to push the cabinet formation forward, since the current vacuum is having bad repercussions on the new majority and the country.”

Speaker Nabih Berri lamented that the attack on a peacekeeping patrol on Friday came due to a political vacuum.

“The attack that targeted international troops in Rmeileh is very dangerous and should push us towards speeding up the formation of the cabinet because the vacuum is paving way for security violations,” Berri told As Safir newspaper published Monday.

Speaker Nabih Berri on Sunday warned that “attempts by some people in Lebanon to settle political accounts with Syria represent a threat to Lebanon’s security and future.”

In a speech delivered by his representative, caretaker Health Minister Mohammed Jawad Khalife, at a ceremony in the southern town of al-Mseileh, Berri warned against “attempts to deviate attention in Lebanon towards the North instead of confronting the impending danger looming over Lebanon, Palestine and Syria due to Israel’s hostility on the southern front.”

U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon on Friday condemned a bomb attack near the Lebanese southern city of Sidon that seriously injured two Italian peacekeepers, pledging to "bring the perpetrators to justice."

"I condemn the attack on the U.N. peacekeepers which happened today in Lebanon," Ban said in a statement. "It is all the more deplorable because today is the International Day of the United Nations Peacekeepers."

The March 8 forces said that as commander-in-chief of the armed forces, President Michel Suleiman should resolve the Telecommunications Ministry crisis and force all security forces to abide by his decisions.

A high-ranking March 8 source told As Safir daily in remarks published Friday that amid a caretaking cabinet and Interior Minister Ziad Baroud’s decision to absolve himself from his duties, the responsibility of Suleiman lies in addressing the issue as all security forces become his subordinates.

Al-Mustaqbal bloc sources have blamed the parties who were behind the toppling of Caretaker PM Saad Hariri’s cabinet for the current government formation impasse.

“The actual responsibility of the crisis lies on those who toppled Caretaker Premier Saad Hariri’s government and claimed that his presence in Lebanon was hindering the formation of the new cabinet,” sources told An Nahar daily about the March 8 forces.
