Air Force Officer Shot Dead in Libya's Benghazi

A Libyan air force colonel was killed Thursday in Benghazi, the latest in a series of attacks on security forces in the cradle of the 2011 revolution.

"The head of air traffic controllers in Benina military base, Colonel Adel Khalil al-Tawahini, was killed Thursday morning," said Colonel Abdallah al-Zaidi, a security forces spokesman.

Anas al-Libi, 49, has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy charges over the 1998 al-Qaida bombings of U.S. embassies in East Africa that killed 244 people and wounded more than 5,000 others.

Libya War Invalids Occupy Parliament

A number of disabled former rebels from the war that toppled Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, broke into the parliament building and vandalized some of it Tuesday, an MP told AFP.

The protest came on the eve of the second anniversary of the rebels' declaration of victory over Gadhafi's forces, three days after he was captured and killed outside his home town Sirte.

NATO Sending Security Specialists to Libya

NATO said Monday it is sending advisers to Libya to help Tripoli strengthen its security set-up amid chaos two years after the killing of Moammar Gadhafi.

With experts fearing civil war, the Western alliance "agreed to respond positively to the request made by the Libyan Prime Minister for NATO to provide advice on defense institution building in Libya", Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in a statement.

The widow of ousted Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi has urged the United Nations and the European Union to help her recover the remains of her husband and their son Mutassim.

In a letter published on the website of Voice of Russia radio on Sunday, Safia Farkash also called on the African Union to investigate the deaths of the two men.

Libya Security Chief Boasts He 'Arrested' PM

A Libyan security chief accused of involvement in Prime Minister Ali Zeidan's abduction 10 days ago said Sunday he was behind the "arrest" and that he was "proud" of it.

Gunmen seized Zeidan from a Tripoli hotel on October 10, before he was released and appeared on television hours later to accuse a political party of being behind the attempted "coup".

Egypt Drivers Abducted in Libya Freed

Dozens of Egyptian truck drivers were freed on Sunday after being abducted by a Libyan armed group pressing for the release of Libyans detained in Egypt, a security source said.

"The drivers who were held by armed men in Ajdabiya (in eastern Libya) were released by their captors," the source told Agence France Presse on condition of anonymity.

Egypt in 'Intense' Talks with Libya to Free Seized Drivers

Egypt is in talks with Libya to secure the release of more than 20 Egyptian drivers seized by militias in the neighboring country, the foreign ministry said Saturday.

Egyptian Ambassador Mohammed Abu Bakr is in "intense contacts with Libyan authorities and several local chieftains to secure the release of Egyptian drivers kidnapped by armed men" in the eastern city of Ajdabiya, ministry spokesman Badr Abdelatty said in remarks on the government's website.

Libya Military Police Chief Assassinated in Benghazi

Libya's military police chief, Colonel Mustapha al-Barghathi, was shot dead Friday in the restive eastern city of Benghazi in the latest assault on the restive country's fledgling security forces.

Unknown assailants gunned down Barghathi outside his home, Colonel Abdullah al-Zaidi, spokesman for the security services, told Agence France Presse.

Lawyers for the former spy chief of slain dictator Moammar Gadhafi on Thursday launched an appeal against the International Criminal Court's historic ruling that he should be tried in Libya.

The ICC ruled last week that Abdallah al-Senussi, 63, should face trial in Libya, the first time it has deferred a case to a national judiciary.
