British Prime Minister David Cameron arrived in Jordan on Monday for a visit to a Syrian refugee camp and talks with King Abdullah II, the foreign ministry in Amman said.

"Britain is the second largest contributor to the Syrian refugee crisis after the U.S.," Cameron told reporters after meeting the monarch.

Lebanon is expected to participate on Tuesday in a conference of states hosting Syrian refugees in Brussels, the head of the delegation, MP Michel Moussa, said.

Moussa told An Nahar newspaper published on Monday that he will call in his speech for providing Lebanon with promised assistance to confront the refugee crisis and to redistribute the displaced Syrians on countries capable of hosting them.

Kataeb Party chief MP Sami Gemayel held talks Thursday with Jordanian King Abdullah II in Amman, a party statement said.

The meeting tackled “the region's affairs and the challenges it is going through,” it said.

The influx of refugees to Europe was triggered in part by donors taking the "cheap option" and not giving enough aid to displaced Syrians in Lebanon and Jordan, the head of the U.N. refugee agency in Jordan said on Wednesday.

Harper told The Associated Press in an interview that refugees feel betrayed by the international community and the aid agencies. This, he said, "is a reason why we are seeing movement back into Syria, and in many cases, movements continue on into Europe and further afield."

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Wednesday bowed to pressure to increase refugee numbers in the face of the Middle East crisis and confirmed Canberra will also join U.S.-led air strikes on the Islamic State group in Syria.

With his hardline against asylum-seekers under intense scrutiny given the drama unfolding in Europe, Abbott said the government was acting "with our head as well as with our heart" to help the thousands of migrants fleeing the conflict.

More than 250 people injured in Yemen's conflict were flown in to Jordan on Sunday for hospital treatment, a medical official said, with emergency services at home overwhelmed with casualties.

The 266 patients included many young civilians, women and children, said Fawzi al-Hammuri, chairman of Jordan's Private Hospitals Association.

The U.N. food agency said on Friday it has ceased assistance to 229,000 Syrian refugees in Jordan because of a lack of funds, but will continue to provide for 211,000 others.

"Due to a lack of funds we had to suspend from the first of September assistance to 229,000 Syrians who live in Jordan, outside (U.N.) refugee camps," World Food Program spokeswoman Dina El-Kassaby said.

Queen Rania of Jordan said Wednesday that moderate Muslims were not doing enough to fight against IS jihadists and their "diabolical ideology."

Speaking at a major French business gathering in Jouy-en-Josas near Paris, the 44-year-old said helping the Middle East's youth was crucial in the fight against the extremist group, which controls swathes of Iraq and Syria on Jordan's doorstep.

Syrian President Bashar Assad described on Tuesday as "legitimate" the presence of fighters from Hizbullah in Syria to back his forces against anti-regime gunmen.

"The difference (between Hizbullah and foreign anti-regime fighters) is legitimacy. Who invited Hizbullah to Syria?" Assad asked. 

Sources close to Prime Minister Tammam Salam have said that Jordanian authorities expressed readiness to facilitate the export of Lebanese products through the Port of Aqaba.

The sources told al-Mustaqbal daily published on Thursday that the pledge was made during Salam's one-day visit to Jordan a day earlier.
