Iran is sending two warships into the Mediterranean Sea, Israel's foreign minister said Wednesday, labeling the act a "provocation" the Jewish state cannot ignore for long.

"Tonight two Iranian warships are supposed to cross the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean Sea on their way to Syria," Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said, speaking at a conference of American Jewish leaders in Jerusalem.

Hizbullah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah on Wednesday called on his fighters to stand ready to occupy the Galilee area in northern Israel should another war "be imposed on Lebanon."

"I call on the mujahedin of the Islamic Resistance to stand ready to take over the Galilee should a war be imposed on Lebanon," Nasrallah addressed via video link a rally organized by Hizbullah in Beirut's southern suburb to commemorate the group's Martyrs' Day.

Israel's deputy Prime Minister, Dan Meridor, has hoped that “the camp of the radicals” that includes Hizbullah would be defeated in the region.

Dan Meridor, who is also Minister of Intelligence and Atomic Energy, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview from Prague that Egyptian protesters' demands for freedom and free election were positive.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on Tuesday said the international community still sought to achieve a peace deal and a Palestinian state by September, despite the region's political turmoil.

Despite the impasse in Israeli-Palestinian peace talks and the resignation of the Palestinian cabinet as well as Saab Erakat, their chief negotiator, Ashton said the goal was still achievable.

Israel has put its embassies on high alert, fearing they could come under attack, after identifying suspicious activities around some of them, Israel's foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

"Unusual occurrences have been identified recently around a few Israeli missions abroad. Our assessment, at this point, is that these sites are under threat, and this is being taken care of," it said in a statement.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Tuesday that the Israeli army may be called into Lebanon in the future, reported Haaretz on Tuesday.

He made his statements during his first military tour with new the new Israeli army Chief of Staff Major General Benny Gantz along Israel’s northern border.

King Abdullah II met on Sunday with the top U.S. military commander who is visiting key allies Jordan and Israel to reaffirm Washington's support following the fall of Egypt's Hosni Mubarak.

The king and U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen "discussed bilateral cooperation and a number of issues of common concern," a brief palace statement said without elaborating.

Israel’s Counter Terrorism Bureau issued a warning to Israeli travelers on Friday ahead of the anniversaries of the assassination of Hizbullah officials Imad Mughniyeh and Abbas al-Moussawi.

The bureau cautioned the public of the increased threat of terror attacks against Israelis abroad, saying they should avoid traveling to Egypt, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Ivory Coast, Mauritania and Venezuela.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg has said that Washington “intends to judge the next Lebanese government by its deeds.”

“We will be watching Prime Minister-designate (Najib) Miqati to see whether he makes good on his public pledge to build a broad-based government that represents all sections of Lebanese society,” Steinberg said in a testimony at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on Egypt and Lebanon on Thursday.

Israel has failed to notify U.N. peacekeepers along the volatile Lebanese-Israeli border of its decision to freeze its plan to withdraw from the disputed village of Ghajar, a U.N. official said Thursday.

"The U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has not been notified by Israel of any change in their position on this matter," said Milos Strugar, UNIFIL's director of political and civil affairs.
