More than 1,000 people were rescued by the army and emergency services on Saturday after being stranded in snow on a road linking Serbia and Hungary for some 15 hours.

"He died on Saturday morning, he had been treated for medical issues for some time but contracted pneumonia, from which he died," lawyer Gabor Horvath said.

Hungarian police began evacuating around 10,000 people in the central city of Szekesfehervar on Thursday after a World War II bomb was discovered next to a kindergarten.
