Ottawa's top diplomat said Tuesday he is close to reaching a deal with Egypt on deporting to Canada one of three imprisoned Al-Jazeera journalists.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said he was working to free Egyptian-Canadian Mohamed Fahmy.

Seven people were shot at a New Year's party in the Canadian city of Calgary, including one victim who has died of his wounds, news reports said Friday.

The shooters were not among the victims, and police said they fled the scene after they opened fire. 

Three Al-Jazeera journalists faced Friday the prospect of at least several more weeks in Egyptian prison, with two of them awaiting a decision on whether they can be deported, lawyers and relatives said.

Australian Peter Greste, Egyptian-Canadian Mohamed Fahmy and Egyptian Baher Mohamed were detained in December 2013 for spreading false information and accused of aiding the blacklisted Muslim Brotherhood.

Investigators in western Canada sought to unravel Wednesday what caused a depressed man to kill eight people -- including two children -- then commit suicide.

The killings took place between Monday and Tuesday in the city of Edmonton, in Alberta province, and have left residents of the snowy city reeling.

Police in western Canada were investigating Wednesday the "senseless mass murder" of six adults and two children, who were apparently slain by a depressed man who later killed himself.

Police Chief Rod Knecht said killings -- the worst ever in Edmonton -- were "planned and deliberate" and apparently were carried out during a domestic dispute.

A Canadian frigate with 250 marines on board set off from Halifax on the Atlantic coast Tuesday to join NATO forces in the Mediterranean Sea monitoring the Ukraine crisis.

HMCS Fredericton, which is carrying a Sea King helicopter and an air detachment, will replace HMCS Toronto, which joined the permanent NATO forces in July. 

Two airplanes belonging to Canada's Porter Airlines had to make emergency landings Sunday after smoke appeared in their cabins, the company said.

A flight leaving Toronto's Billy Bishop Airport was diverted to suburban Toronto Pearson Airport soon after take off "when the crew detected smoke inside the aircraft" Porter said in a statement.

U.S. officers shot and wounded a Canadian man early Sunday as he crossed a border bridge into the United States while waving a handgun, officials said.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said that the man, who was not identified, stopped his car around 3:00 am (0800 GMT) near an inspection booth on the Ambassador Bridge that links Detroit, Michigan to the Canadian city of Windsor in Ontario province.

The latest round of Ukraine-related sanctions by the United States and Canada hamper efforts to resolve the conflict, Russia's foreign ministry said Saturday.
