Elaine Stritch, Brash Stage Legend, Dies at 89

Elaine Stritch, the brash theater performer whose gravelly, gin-laced voice and impeccable comic timing made her a Broadway legend, has died. She was 89.

Joseph Rosenthal, Stritch's longtime attorney, said the actress died Thursday of natural causes at her home in Birmingham, Michigan.

Ukraine Says Malaysian Jet with 295 on Board Shot Down near Russia Border

A Malaysian passenger plane carrying 295 people was shot down Thursday over a town in eastern Ukraine, an official said.

Anton Gerashenko, an adviser to Ukraine's Interior Minister, said on his Facebook page the plane was flying at an altitude of 10,000 meters (33,000 feet) when it was hit by a missile fired from a Buk launcher, which can fire missiles up to an altitude of 22,000 meters (72,000 feet).

Man Starts Fire Using 'Blowtorch' to Kill Spider

A man who used a can of spray paint and a lighter as a makeshift blowtorch to kill a spider in his laundry room started a blaze that caused $60,000 worth of damage, Seattle fire officials said Wednesday.

The man and his mother got out of the house, and no injuries were reported in the fire that broke out in the West Seattle home Tuesday night, said Kyle Moore, a spokesman for the Seattle Fire Department.

Police Say Kennedy Intruder Was Seeking Katy Perry

A man accused of breaking into a home in the Kennedy compound and telling authorities he was looking for singer Katy Perry has been sent to a mental health facility for evaluation.

James Lacroix, 53, appeared in court Wednesday on a breaking and entering charge. A not guilty plea was entered for him, but a formal arraignment was delayed until Aug. 13.

The International Biathlon Union says in a statement that the 33-year-old Sachenbacher-Stehle's ban is retrospective from Feb. 17 — the date she tested positive for the banned stimulant methylhexaneamine.
