Owl Enters 10th Story Apartment, Kills Canary

An owl flew into a 10th story apartment in Coeur d'Alene, apparently opened a bird cage and killed one of two canaries inside, the residents said.

Sue Sausser said she awakened Sunday to find bird droppings and feathers all over her apartment, the Coeur d'Alene Press reported (http://bit.ly/1riwYfi).

Less Shake from Artificial Quakes, Fed Study Says

Man-made earthquakes, a side effect of some high-tech energy drilling, cause less shaking and in general are about 16 times weaker than natural earthquakes with the same magnitude, a new federal study found.

People feeling the ground move from induced quakes — those that are not natural, but triggered by injections of wastewater deep underground— report significantly less shaking than those who experience more normal earthquakes of the same magnitude, according to a study by U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist Susan Hough.

Blast in China Coal Mine Traps 29 Miners

An explosion Tuesday in a coal mine in eastern China trapped 29 workers underground, state media reported.

About 30 rescuers were trying to reach those trapped in the private mine in Huainan city in Anhui province but were awaiting the arrival of heavy rescue equipment, China Central Television said. Ten other miners managed to escape, one of whom was injured.

Train Accident Kills 21 in Eastern India

A passenger train struck a crowded rickshaw, killing 21 people at a railway crossing in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, a railway official said Tuesday.

All the passengers and the driver of the motorized rickshaw died in the accident that occurred late Monday near Semra, a town in Bihar, said Vinod Kumar, a railway police superintendent.

Bordeaux Beats Monaco 4-1 in French League

Monaco's poor start to the season continued on Sunday as it lost 4-1 at Bordeaux for its second straight defeat in the French league.

Monaco striker Dimitar Barbatov opened the scoring with a diving header on the stroke of halftime. But Bordeaux forward Diego Rolan leveled from close range three minutes after the break, and the hosts took the lead when Argentine striker Emiliano Sala converted a penalty in the 61st.
