Obama Presents Afghan War Vet with Medal of Honor 

A former Army captain whose heroic actions in a deadly Afghan battle were captured on video received the nation's highest military award, the Medal of Honor, from President Barack Obama at the White House Tuesday.

Obama placed the award around the neck of William D. Swenson for his actions in a lengthy battle against the Taliban in the Ganjgal valley near the Pakistan border four years ago, which claimed the lives of five Americans, 10 Afghan army troops and an interpreter.

Officials: Bombing at Mosque Kills Afghan Governor

A bomb planted inside a mosque killed the governor of Afghanistan's eastern Logar province as he was delivering a speech Tuesday morning to mark the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, officials said.

The explosion at the main mosque in the provincial capital of Puli Alam killed Governor Arsallah Jamal and wounded 15 people — five of them critically, said the governor's spokesman, Din Mohammad Darwesh.

Beijing Airport Bomber Receives 6-Year Sentence 

A partly paralyzed man who exploded a bomb inside Beijing's airport in hopes of winning redress over an alleged beating by public officials was given a six-year prison sentence Tuesday.

Former motorcycle taxi driver Ji Zhongxing went on trial last month for endangering public safety with a homemade bomb. Ji was the only person injured in the July 20 explosion, losing a hand. The attack drew widespread condemnation but also sympathy from many Chinese who said it shows the government ignores the powerless and marginalized.

David Lynn of England Wins Portugal Masters

David Lynn shot an 8-under 63 Sunday to come from six shots back and win the Portugal Masters, ending a nine-year wait for his second European Tour title.

Lynn was tied for 16th entering the fourth round, six shots behind leader Paul Waring, but started with two birdies and added three more on his last five holes at the Oceanico Victoria course. That gave him an 18-under total of 266.

Dennis Kimetto of Kenya broke the course record Sunday in capturing the Chicago Marathon, and compatriot Rita Jeptoo was the women's winner in the first major marathon in the United States since the Boston bombings.

Kimetto finished in 2 hours, 3 minutes, 45 seconds, leading a 1-2-3 finish for Kenyan men. He beat the mark of 2:04:38 set by Ethiopia's Tsegaye Kebede last year. He pulled away from Emannuel Mutai over the last few miles and was all alone with both arms raised as he crossed the finish line.
