PSP: Jumblat Stressed to Asir the Need to Prevent Syria Unrest from Spreading to Lebanon
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةThe Progressive Socialist Party stressed on Tuesday that the party’s criticism of the Syrian regime is not linked to the internal Lebanese situation.
It said in a statement: “PSP leader MP Walid Jumblat emphasized during his recent meeting with Sheikh Ahmed al-Asir the need to prevent the unrest in Syria from spreading to Lebanon.”
“He had also voiced his position that all issues that may create disputes in Lebanon must be avoided,” it said.
The MP had held talks with the Salafist cleric on Saturday.
On Monday, Asir, the imam of the Bilal bin Rabbah mosque in the southern city of Sidon, had called for staging a demonstration in downtown Beirut in support of the residents of besieged city of Homs.
The PSP demanded that all forms of support for the Syrian people “must be symbolic and expressed in a civilized manner in order to avert any tensions that are caused by popular gatherings.”
It continued: “Jumblat’s position is stable in that he is keen on preserving the current Lebanese government.”
“The party will remain a member the diverse factions that comprise the government,” it added.
This statement was made in reference to Hizbullah official Ammar al-Moussawi’s remarks on Monday that the Lebanese opposition is not the only side banking on the collapse of the Syrian regime, “but some sides in government are also counting on it.”
“The PSP is keen on maintaining civil peace in Lebanon regardless of the differences in opinion in the Lebanese government over the Syrian crisis,” said the Progressive Socialist Party.
although to his defense I beleive it was mostly due to "threat" from Syria's regime & HA. So it's in his best interest (and all of us 'true' democratic striving Lebanese) to see Assad crumble and with it, HA!
No matter who wins in Syria, it is coming to Lebanon. If it doesn't, the lebanese will drag it in.
Who cares about Syria. We have enough problems. Let's focus on that ! Our country is crumbling and our economy is zero!
Our country is crumbling primarily because of a it's being held hostage as it has for years and years by this cancerous cell called SYRIA! Remove it & there is a good chance we will survive. If not....you know how the story ends......
We'll get there bigsami... unfortunately we live in a country where some people are more devoted to the syrian regime then they are to their own country...they think syria first... and we all know who those traitors are...
Soon, they will loose their ally, then we can only hope for the better...
Very good and rational thinking by Jumblat. Lebanon is split quite extensively between those who are pro and anti Syrian regime. Any support for and against the Syrian regime could result in clashes which could lead to civil war in Lebanon which is what the Syrian is hoping for to switch attention from the Syrian crisis to the Lebanese. Lebanon should be spared any of this. The Syrian regime will eventually be toppled by the Srrian people and then lebanon would become normal again. We should be rational like Jumblat.
All the people accusing him of hypocrisy are laughable. Of course he's going to change his position based on events in the region and Lebanon. Why did he switch from M14 to M8? To save the Druze from attacks by the 'resistance' like what happened in the little May war.
Why would he stay loyal to his alliance to Assad if he was forced into it by threats and out of self preservation? This is logical for him to take the opportunity to free himself of the Syrian government's grip.
I am not a supporter of Jumblat, but one thing I know, is that he is a public servant to his community and if that means changing positions to serve them well, then let it be. If all Lebanese politicians acted on behalf of their country, then all of them will be switching positions in the right direction!!!!
Gabby, would you say that the game is over for your friend "Walid" or for your friend ASSad?"
Judging by the way things are unfortunately going for Jumby in Syria, I suggest that Jumby be put on a 24/7/365 suicide watch. wa qad ou3zira man anzara
He's doing this to save the Druze from a Sunni attack after the fall of Assad. There are a lot of Druze in the shabiha n the army. This is the only way to avoid a massacre like the one that will happen the the alawi, sadly.
I think that jumblat is the only politician who makes some sense these days. In the past his strings were being pulled by syria, Hiz, USA etc... His past decisions were not made based on his political beliefs but because He Had No Choice and until we all understand this your being nieve or just plane stupid :)
